Children’s Rights and Positive Parenting (CRPP) Portfolio

Sonke’s Child Rights And Positive Parenting (CRPP) cross-cutting portfolio works with all of Sonke’s units to advance our work to end violence against children and to promote child rights and gender-equitable, non-violent and positive parenting.

The main programme within the portfolio is the MenCare Global Fatherhood campaign, which Sonke co-ordinates with Promundo. Through media, program development and advocacy, MenCare works at multiple levels to engage men as caregivers and as fathers: as program participants in fathers groups, community mobilisers who push for progressive family legislation, and institutions to see engaging men as caregivers as a key dimension of gender equality.

In South Africa, Sonke implements both MenCare and MenCare+, a focused and intensive implementation of a package of services and actions to engage men more in sexual, reproductive, maternal and neonatal health. The MenCare+ team is currently working closely with MOSAIC Centre for Women and Children to implement parenting and sexual, reproductive health and rights training for hundreds of men and women across the Western Cape.

Various countries in the MenEngage Africa network (which Sonke co-ordinates with HopeM) implement MenCare and MenCare+ activities to respond to children’s rights issues facing many African countries.

Through our global collaboration with Promundo, Save the Children International and Rutgers WPF, Sonke and partners will publish in mid 2015 the State of the World’s Fathers report, the first ever global report on father involvement in family life and the care economy which we will use to advocate for men’s greater involvement in equitable, caring and non-violent parenting.

The CRPP portfolio also extends beyond MenCare. In South Africa, together with the Positive Discipline Working Group, Sonke drives a positive discipline campaign and we are working to achieve an amendment to the Children’s Act to establish a full ban on corporal punishment in all settings in early 2015. In the Africa region, we are working with civil society organisations and networks to promote children’s rights and especially to prevent violence against children by engaging men and boys.
