Chiara is an intern from Duke University, located in the state of North Carolina in the USA. Going into her second year, she is double majoring in Economics and Visual and Media Studies, with a certificate in Innovation & Entrepreneurship. She was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida, and is a first-generation American from a Cuban-Italian family.
Chiara is particularly passionate about feminism, as well as social justice in general. Her previous work includes volunteering with her high school’s chapter of Girl Up, a club which is associated with the United Nations and works to empower young girls and women around the world. As part of her engagement with the organization, she worked closely with her local homeless shelter for women and children, Lotus House. She also has a strong interest in fashion and is particularly intrigued by the intersection between feminism and fashion.
Previously, she also worked at a women’s boutique called MVM Miami for several months, helping to manage and grow their social media platforms as well as assist customers. Overall, Chiara is excited about the work she is doing with Sonke to help eradicate gender-based violence, HIV/AIDS, and to promote equality in South Africa and internationally.
