Zia Wasserman has recently been appointed as Sonke’s National Prisons Coordinator, with a focus on protecting and securing the health and human rights of inmates and promoting the reintegration of previously incarcerated persons.
Zia graduated from the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 2013 with a BA LLB (Bachelor of Laws), and in 2015 with an LLM (Master of Laws) specialising in Criminology, Victimology and International Criminal Law. Her master’s thesis was essentially an in-depth investigation into the process of securing effective reparative justice for female victims of wartime sexual violence.
Zia has worked at Sonke Gender Justice as a research consultant since 2016, working on various projects addressing violence prevention, with a particular focus on advancing prison transformation and the decriminalisation of sex work in South Africa. She is passionate about gender justice, criminal justice and the protection of human rights, and hopes to make a positive contribution to these fields.
