On the 1st of August 2018, the onset of what is observed as Women’s Month in South Africa, women and gender non-conforming persons across the country will march to highlight the plight of women and girls who continue to suffer abuse at the hands of men and boys. Called the #TotalShutDown campaign, the march has been organised by women and women’s rights organisations – and the organisers say this is a march exclusively for women and gender non-conforming individuals, men should refrain from participating. But what lies at the heart of this stance?
