Miss Curvy – MenEngage Uganda responseThe launch of a controversial beauty contest known as Miss Curvy, which targets plus size women, has caused a stir in Uganda. The pageant was announced recently by the Minister for Tourism, Godfrey Kiwanda, who wants to use the women as products to attract tourists to the country. MenEngage Uganda joined women’s rights organisations to condemn the pageant.

New Steering Committee for MenEngage Africa selectedAt the just-ended MenEngage Africa Alliance Annual General Meeting, a new Steering Committee was elected. The new Steering Committee members selected are 11 in total, including a member of the MenEngage Africa youth structure. The new chairperson is Hassan SekaJoolo of MenEngage Uganda and his deputy is Kassoum Coulibaly of MenEngage Mali.

Margaret Wanzuu Foundation engages dads and daughters to end child marriagesMargaret Wanzuu Foundation, a member of Kenya MenEngage Alliance (KEMEA), hosted a Dads and Daughters dialogue in January 2019 to facilitate dialogue aimed at ending Forced and Early Child Marriages in Kenya. The initiative involved a workshop for dads and their daughters aged between 9 to 17 years of age to discuss issues affecting their development, particularly child marriage, openly.

HIV crisis among the youth in KenyaIn the face of HIV, it’s important to “tell the youth that it is okay to delay sexual activity, it’s also important to involve young people when developing HIV programmes for them, and if the youth get friendlier health workers at health facilities, they are more likely to open up about the problems they face.” That’s the message that Job Akuno, national co-ordinator of Kenya MenEngage Alliance (KEMEA), delivered during a panel discussion on Kenya’s Citizen TV.
