John Nyamayaro joined Sonke Gender Justice as the Resource Mobilization Coordinator from October 2020. He is passionate about organisation strengthening and partnership development. John spent a significant part of his 29-year working career in the service of non-governmental organizations and vulnerable communities in East and Southern Africa. John’s immediate and past role was free-lance organisation development consulting after having left a Tearfund UK funded Sexual Gender Based Violence Project Manager position at Zoe-life, based in Durban, South Africa.
John worked in Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Rwanda, Lesotho and South Africa – managing partnerships (including development of funding proposals) on refugees; refugee repatriation and resettlement; flood relief response; food aid; child protection and programming; general community development including water, sanitation and hygiene programmes; livelihoods and food security programming; support of survivors of sexual gender based violence as well as advocacy related work.
John holds a Bachelor of Social Work degree and has attended a number of short courses over the years that have complemented his qualification and experience working at senior level management positions in the various organizations that included Help Age International (UK), Action Aid (UK), American Friends Service Committee (USA), Dorcas Aid International (The Netherland), Oxfam Australia, Zoe – life (Tearfund UK) as well as Environment Africa (Zimbabwe).
Throughout his work experience, John gained valuable insight in working with multi-national donor agencies as well as local CSI partners and foundations that included USAID, the Global Fund, DFID, AUSAID, ELMA, OXFAM, FNB, Anglo American, Community Chest, DGMT and many others. At the same time, John has incredible experience of working within and in collaboration with lowly resourced organizations and communities.
John has an immense understanding of the challenges that confront funding of local organizations and issues of sustainability – especially now (post covid-19 pandemic and its impact). He is thus passionate about supporting such resource mobilization initiatives in order to make the much-needed difference across partnerships and their beneficiaries.
