Sonke uses the term womxn to encompass an inclusive term and avoid sexism and exclusion connotated by the inclusion of ‘man’ or ‘men’ in the spelling of ‘woman’ and ‘women’ – challenging the binaries that such terminology perpetuates. Womxn includes all people who identify as womxn, including gender non-conforming womxn and trans-womxn.

Sonke is a South African-based non-profit organisation working throughout Africa. We believe women and men, girls and boys can work together to resist patriarchy, advocate for gender justice and achieve gender transformation.
