Parenting & Caregiving

Our work under MenCare and positive parenting, which is a global campaign, run in partnership Equimundo, centers on reshaping fatherhood norms, equipping men to participate actively as caregivers and advocates for gender equality. Our approach spans on-the-ground education, media tools, and strategic leadership to embed lasting transformation.

In South Africa, as in most countries, social and economic policies continue to reflect and reinforce the link between fatherhood and work, and motherhood and care. Providing leave for fathers is one way to encourage men’s increased participation in caregiving as well as a more equal division of household labour between men and women. It can also help to promote gender equality. We have been instrumental in influencing South Africa’s new parental leave judgment, as now South African fathers can now share four months parental leave with their partners, according to a recent verdict by Johannesburg High Court.

We regularly publish State of the Father’s Reports offering a crucial data-driven look at the realities of fatherhood in various countries. The reports challenge traditional view of fatherhood, break down traditional gender roles.

We continue to implement the MenCare 50/50 campaign, engaging men in caregiving and domestic responsibilities through community workshops, school dialogues, and workplace sessions. The campaign has reached thousands of audiences with messages promoting gender-equitable parenting, redistribution of unpaid care work, and healthy family relationships.
