Who we are

With offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Agincourt, Sonke works globally, and especially across Africa, to strengthen government, civil society and citizen capacity to take action to promote gender equality, prevent domestic and sexual violence and reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS. In this way the organisation contributes to the development of societies in which men, women, youth and children can enjoy equitable, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of just and democratic societies.

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Who we share your data with

We do not share your personal data with any third party organisations, developers or marketing agencies. If you choose to receive our newsletter/RSS updates, we add your name and email address to our mailing list. You can choose to opt out of our mailing list at any time via your account settings page.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognise and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

Information gathered by Google Analytics is also kept indefinitely for our logistical recording purposes, but this data is purely statistical in nature and cannot be used to identify specific users in any way.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this website, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Please send an email to info@genderjustice.org.za if you would like to review a copy of your personal data or have it erased from our database. They will honour your request as soon as possible.

POPIA Act

Sonke Gender Justice values and respects your privacy and would like to assure you that we are committed to keeping your personal information secure and confidential.

With the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) coming into effect from July 1, 2021, we want to ensure that we have your consent to keep sending through communication to you.

The POPI Act gives effect to the constitutional right to privacy, regulates the way personal information may be processed and provides rights and remedies to protect personal information.

The primary purpose of the POPI Act is to regulate the collection and processing of personal information in a manner that will safeguard such information against unauthorised access and usage.

You receive email from us because you are a partner, or a subscriber and we want to continue sending communication to you. If you are happy to stay on the mailing list there is no action required. However, if you do not wish to continue receiving communication from us then please opt out by clicking on the “Unsubscribe” button at the footer of any of our emails to be removed.

If your organisation’s firewall blocks the unsubscribe button, simply send us an e-mail with the word “Unsubscribe” in the Subject line. Please note that you can opt-out of our e-mail communication at any time.
