Sonke Executive Director Dean Peacock presented a paper at the UN Expert Group Meeting on prevention of violence against women and girls, in Bangkok, Thailand.
The meeting was convened in preparation for the fifty-seventh session of the Commission of the Status of Women, the priority theme of which is ‘Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls’. The Expert Group meeting was designed to contribute to a full understanding of the issue and to assist the Commission in its deliberations.
Sonke’s presence on the UN Expert Group is a huge recognition of our work, in and of itself, and the Commission for the Status of Women is one of the most influential institutions in the world in the feld of gender. The Commission has a massive influence on international policy relating to women’s rights, and influences domestic policy in countries around the world as well.
Dean presented a paper co-authored by Gary Barker of Instituto Promundo on working with men and boys for gender equality, reviewing current practices in the field and identifying emerging approaches.

The meeting was convened by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), in collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and World Health Organization (WHO).
