Today (25 April 2018), Day 3 of the II Simposio MenEngage Africa (2nd MenEngage Africa Symposium), join Mabel Sengendo (Ma’belle SN), GBV programme co-ordinator for MenEngage Africa, and Jean Kemitare of Raising Voices, Secretariat of GBV Prevention Network, from 13:00-14:30 as they facilitate a session on gender-based violence (GBV) and its impacts on the African landscape.
Background
GBV in Africa seems to be on an uphill and destructive scale and it is firmly rooted in the existence and prevalence of patriarchal systems of power at every level of human interaction, that is, politically, socially and spiritually within historically often male-dominated communities and societies around the globe.
As such, GBV exists and is further perpetuated in a variety of ways in patriarchal societies, with deep entrenchment in cultural/traditional and societal attitudes, norms and behaviours.
This leads to the internalisation of patriarchy, normalising the occurrence of GBV, whether in the harsh and violent forms like violent homophobia, rape, domestic violence, or in more structural expressions like polygamy, child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), making it an acceptable part of life.
Session objective
To scrutinise the patriarchal systems that have contributed to the normalisation of GBV in Africa. The session, which will take the format of a workshop, is intended to create space for an open and engaging discussion on Africa realities and what can to be done to challenge patriarchy and contribute to ending GBV in Africa.
