Evaluation of the Policy Development & Advocacy Unit

Sonke recently commissioned an external evaluation of its Policy Development and Advocacy (PDA) Unit, focusing on work funded by the Embassy of Finland in Pretoria’s Local Cooperation Fund from 2013–2015. The PDA Unit leads the organisation’s strategic legal and policy advocacy efforts in South Africa. The unit works to shape legal and policy decisions on gender equality, sexual and gender-based violence, HIV and AIDS, and human rights. The PDA Unit utilizes a mix of responsive actions, and long-term advocacy to achieve its goals, including rapid response advocacy on topical developments, impact litigation to galvanize reform and ensure implementation where the State is unresponsive; coalition building to strengthen the collective action of civil society; as well as empirical, legal and other research to inform advocacy efforts.
