As part of the 16 days of Activism campaign, Sonke Gender Justice focused one of its campaigns on the gendered impact of Climate Change and its effects on gender-based violence. Women are more vulnerable to the impact of climate change than men, as they make up the majority of the world’s poor and are more dependent on natural resources that are under threat from climate change.
Sonke recognises the importance of engaged and empowered citizen activism to support and hold government accountable in addressing social justice ills, and such, we partnered with Jozi Fm, a community radio station based in Johannesburg, to run live reads throughout its programming during the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence which runs from 25th November (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) until 10th December, Human Rights Day. This is one of the live reads from the station, to sensitise the audience on the gendered impact of climate change.
