Advanced Short Course in Reproductive Justice Advocacy: Shifting from Litigation to Transformative Advocacy Practice
Introduction
Afya na Haki Institute and Sonke Gender Justice are collaborating to deliver a 5-day Advanced Short Course in Reproductive Justice Advocacy focusing on shifting from Litigation to Transformative Advocacy Practice. Ahaki Institute is an African institution of higher learning specialising in delivering health and social justice programmes, and Sonke Gender Justice is a pan-African organisation advancing gender equality and strengthening accountability in law, policy, and public systems across Africa.
At a time when civic space is shrinking, funding landscapes are shifting, and legal victories alone are proving insufficient to secure lasting reproductive justice gains, advocacy strategies must evolve. Across the continent, reproductive and gender justice actors are confronting increasingly complex political, economic, and social realities that require more than courtroom interventions. While litigation remains an important instrument, sustainable transformation demands integrated advocacy approaches that combine legal expertise with research, communications, policy engagement, coalition-building, and community mobilisation.
This short course is designed in response to that urgency and seeks to strengthen the capacity of practitioners within the Sonke network to move beyond reactive and litigation-heavy strategies toward proactive, systems-oriented advocacy capable of shifting power, influencing public discourse, and shaping durable policy outcomes. The programme offers a practical and context-responsive learning space for advocates and practitioners committed to advancing reproductive justice in Africa through transformative strategies.
Objective
To strengthen the capacity of Sonke network practitioners to design and implement integrated, transformative advocacy strategies for reproductive justice that move beyond litigation toward sustained policy, systems, and social change.
Mode of Delivery
- Five consecutive days of intensive learning
- Delivery through the Ahaki Learning Management System
- Facilitated live sessions
- Case studies and peer exchange
- Practical advocacy design exercises
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Joint Certificate issued by Ahaki Institute and Sonke Gender Justice.
Duration
The course will run from 23rd March 2026 until 27th March 2026.
Target Audience
This course is specifically tailored for members of the Sonke Gender Justice, including advocacy practitioners, legal professionals, programme officers, researchers, campaigners, and movement leaders working in gender justice and SRHR.
Applicants should demonstrate active engagement in advocacy and a clear interest in strengthening integrated strategies beyond litigation-centered approaches.
Women, young professionals, and practitioners working with marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply.
