Founded in 2006, Sonke is a women’s rights organisation that is committed to feminist principles, using a rights-based and gender-transformative approach to achieve human rights and gender justice. Our vision is a world in which women, children, men and gender non-conforming individuals enjoy equitable, caring, healthy and happy relationships that contribute to the development of gender-just and democratic societies. Sonke strengthens governments, civil society and citizen’s capacity to advance gender justice and women’s rights, prevent gender-based violence, and reduce the spread of HIV and the impact of AIDS, and in this way contributing to social justice and the elimination of poverty.

About the Position

The purpose of the Community Mobiliser is to mobilise the community to participate in the program implementation, training of community and other related activities that seek to provide knowledge, skills and motivation to promote gender equality and prevention of Gender Based Violence.

Key duties and responsibilities

Community mapping 

    • Assist the Senior Trainer to conduct community mapping of the areas where the Sonke intervention will be implemented.

    Recruitment 

      • Assist the Senior Trainer to recruit participants for women leadership, Gender Based Violence prevention interventions, supporting community mobilisation and other activities such as workshops, dialogues, IEC, soccer/sports sessions.

      Community Action Teams and CBO’s 

        • Work with Community Action Team (CAT) and other Community Based Organisations to carry out messages of the Inkanyezi project, amplifying the voices of women in the communities.
        • Support Community action team activities, working with the Senior Trainer.
        • Attend all stakeholder meetings with or on behalf of the Senior Trainer.

        Community Mobilisation

          • Assist with community mapping, outlined by the Senior Trainer.
          • Assist with the Identification of ‘young women’ settings’ within those communities, such as youth clubs and churches through community mapping exercise.

          Community Events 

            • Assist with the recruitment of community events such as traditional, elected and religious meetings, door-to-door campaign, mass mobilisation, and schools’ program etc.

            Facilitation of community education and mobilisation sessions and other Sonke workshops

              • Assist with the facilitation of Community Education and Mobilisation sessions and other Sonke workshops for women leadership.
              • Assist with mobilization for policy and advocacy related activities.
              • Assist with preparations for training and dialogue logistics.

              IEC Talks

                • Co-conduct IEC talks with the Senior Trainer in different places in Mnquma and Mbhashe municipalities.
                • Distributing IEC materials such as gender-based violence prevention i.e. pamphlets, female condoms, other related materials.

                Reporting

                  • Timely collation and submission of activity reports to the Senior Trainer.
                  • Administration.

                  Administration

                    • Ensure that you are familiar with Finance, Administration and Procurement procedures and ensure that these are consistently adhered to.
                    • Ensure requisitions, quotation and payments are prepared in line with the payment process.

                    General

                      • Facilitate a smooth exit from target area at the end of the project period.
                      • Other related tasks as assigned.
                      • Attending all staff meetings, staff retreats, staff trainings and international meetings as required.

                      Qualifications and experience

                      • Senior Certificate.
                      • A Diploma or other higher education qualification will be advantageous.
                      • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in programmatic aspects related to HIV/AIDS and reproductive health, the prevention of gender-based violence and community mobilisation.
                      • Experience working in the areas of gender equality, gender-based violence, intimate partner violence, human rights, including working with girls.
                      • Good knowledge of the Public, Private and NGO sectors in South Africa.
                      • Significant experience with facilitation, writing field reports, liaison with the M&E office, and people management.

                      • Confident, assertive communicator who can work comfortably with diverse groups of people and across all levels.
                      • Excellent writing skills in English and preferably, but not required, another SA language.
                      • Attention to detail.
                      • Able to prioritise work and manage deadlines.
                      • Innovative and creative, able to see new opportunities.
                      • Planning and time management – meets deadlines.
                      • Reflective and open to learning.
