Sonke applauds the Commission for Gender Equality’s stance for the decriminalisation of sex work in SA

Sonke recently submitted a letter with the Commission for Gender Equality applauding their position in favour of the decriminalisation of sex work in South Africa. In addition, Sonke jointly submitted a letter of support with several key gender and women’s rights organisations and individuals working in the area of gender equality and women’s rights.

Sonke’s support for the decriminalisation of sex work is based on the fact that the current illegal status of sex work has resulted in sex workers facing high levels of violence, abuse and ill-treatment which violate sex workers’ constitutional rights to human dignity, equality, freedom, bodily and psychological integrity and the right to freely choose a trade, occupation or profession.
