Who’s who at the Women’s Heath, Masculinities and Empowerment: Advocacy and Training?

odile1. Odile Mukayiranga holds a Masters degree in Gender Development Studies and an under-graduate degree in Political Science. She is currently working in a bank, where she is in charge of Business Development for small earners. After completing her course in Gender and Development Studies, she discovered how much she can impact communities better than just providing financial services. This might be her career turning point.
Serah Gitome2. Serah Gitome is an epidemiologist and a medical doctor. Her research interests include HIV and AIDS prevention and reproductive health. Serah is currently working with the Kenya Medical Research institute (KEMRI). She holds a Masters degree in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery degree (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi. Gender norms pose a significant barrier to the uptake of reproductive health, especially among women in many communities in Kenya. She hopes to learn how to make gender norms considerations in designing reproductive health programmes / research and to understand how to navigate these norms in order to make programes more effective. She also wants to understand how to generate discussions about transformative gender norms at all levels to ensure achievement of lasting changes with reproductive health programmes.
Mpho Mabhena3. Mphokuhle Mabhena is a Sonke Gender Justice trainer. She expects to better understand issues that affect women’s health and how men can be involved in this process. The lessons learnt will further equip her in engaging religious leaders and faith communities.
Solomy Awiidi4. Solomy Awiidi is a human rights lawyer who has a passion for the rights of women and children. She currently works as a programme manager with MIFUMI , a feminist and women’s rights organisation in Uganda. She wants to learn more about women’s health and the link it has to masculinity (men and their roles), realising that women’s rights and equality will be easier to achieve with men on board.
Edward Makoni5. Edward Makoni is a Programme Officer for livelihood programmes in Carias Zimbabwe Masvingo. He holds a Master of Science degree in Demography and Population Studies, a Bachelors of Arts degree in English and Communication studies, a degree in Development Studies and a Diploma in Education. Edward works with communities in the livelihood and youth empowerment programme where issues of inequality and negative social norms are hampering women empowerment initiatives.
