META-REVIEW
Impact Report: Looking back over ten years of Sonke Gender Justice

In 2017, Sonke sought to review and offer an account of our contribution, over the last ten years, towards reaching gender equality, reducing gender-based violence, and addressing HIV and AIDS in South Africa and at regional and global levels.

With this newly-published, independent report from Singizi Consulting Africa, we have sought to understand both our successes and challenges, as well as generate knowledge about the ways in which these changes are brought about so as to contribute to learning – both our own and the sector more widely.

The report reveals that at local level we’ve improved access to justice for survivors and their families and helped reduce levels of violence at the broader community level. At the national level, we’ve helped secure progressive laws, achieved important legal victories and set new jurisprudence and used the media to shift social norms. While at the regional and global levels, we’ve established and strengthened regional and global networks and coalitions and contributed to important regional and global policy change.

We hope you find the impact review informative and useful. And should you wish to send us feedback, kindly email info@genderjustice.org.za.

One in three people surveyed report being sexually abused by police
“‘I have actually lost count of how many times the police have raped me. I’ve become numb,’ she says. ‘It is a constant battle to be a sex worker, especially if you’re going to be working on the streets.'”
