Wessel van den Berg is the Children’s Rights and Positive Parenting unit manager at Sonke Gender Justice. In this capacity he supports Sonke’s work on parenting and children’s rights in the Africa region and globally. The unit’s work focuses on gender equal, caring and non-violent parenting. Key projects include the MenCare Fatherhood Campaign, advocacy for the prohibition of corporal punishment in all settings, and the promotion of gender equal parental leave. Wessel is passionate about gender transformation and sustainable development. The topic of men’s contribution to childcare work has grounded most of his career. He holds a Masters degree in Sustainable Development (Cum Laude) and is currently enrolled for a PhD in Sociology at the University of Stellenbosch. His PhD research is an in-depth participatory study of a few families, tracking how gender and care interplay in these families. His family network is anchored in the winelands of the Western Cape where he does his main job of care work with his partner and two children.
