A recent report by Human Rights Watch pointed to a number of human rights issues in South Africa:
- Access to education for children and adults with disabilities
- Accountability for xenophobic attacks on foreign nationals
- Women’s Rights
- Sexual orientation and gender identity
The report noted particularly the high rate of rape in the country saying:
“Rights groups expressed concerns about the government’s failure to develop a national strategy to combat the high rate of violence against women and the continued underreporting of rape.”
On Human Rights Day 2017, Sonke asked a number of South Africans what they feel the most urgent human rights issue is in the country right now.
