Nearly two years after David Olyn was brutally murdered and after nearly 40 court appearances which Sonke monitored closely, we are glad that the Western Cape High Court in Ceres has convicted Christo Oncke for murder and congratulate local activists in Ceres, especially Witzenberg Rural Development, for their dedicated court monitoring and human rights education. However, Sonke joins other civil society organisations in raising concerns about whether justice has been fully served and whether others weren’t involved in David’s murder.
