Communications Manager

Working from offices in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Agincourt, Mpumalanga, and with nearly one hundred community action teams across the country, Sonke works across Africa to strengthen government, civil society and citizen capacity to promote gender equality and human rights, prevent domestic and sexual violence and reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS.

Sonke is looking for a committed and experienced individual to fill the position of Communications Manager:

Overview of Responsibilities

The Communications Manager has the direct responsibility of defining Sonke’s overall communications strategy in South Africa and the region. The Communications Manager will play a strong role in helping to guide and develop Sonke’s advocacy campaigns. The incumbent will manage the organization’s identity and image, media relations, including mass media; documentation and reporting of the organization’s activities; community and social media; support materials development; provide training to Sonke staff and partners on media advocacy, and contribute to developing the national, regional and global advocacy campaigns. This is a management position, supervising a team of five staff members based in both the Cape Town and JHB offices.

Qualifications

Masters degree in the social sciences, with a strong preference for Journalism, Public Health, or Human Rights degrees, and must be fluent in spoken and written English and must have proven written skills. A background in journalism and/or active contacts amongst media institutions is a requirement. Experience in having worked in a complex human rights, public health and/or development environment is required. Expertise in any of the following areas will be of benefit: gender equality, gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, democracy, governance; peace and conflict; children’s rights, human rights. Fluency in French, Swahili or Portuguese is desirable.

R550-R600K per annum
