Myth busters about Sex Work

2 December 2025 //

Sex work is work. Decriminalising it in South Africa is not only a matter of justice but a vital step toward protecting human rights, reducing gender-based violence, and ensuring that sex workers can access health and safety services without fear or stigma. Criminalisation has perpetuated abuse, driven sex workers into unsafe spaces, and undermined HIV prevention efforts. Evidence shows that decriminalisation could dramatically reduce new infections and empower sex workers to report trafficking and violence without fear of reprisal. Recognising sex workers’ agency and bringing the industry under labour and occupational health laws will create a safer, more equitable society where dignity and choice are respected.
