UNAIDS launched a global policy dubbed “Male engagement in the HIV response – A platform for Action” at the International AIDS Conference which was held in Durban, from 18 – 22 July 2016. The policy seeks to encourage men and boys to assume positive health-seeking attitudes to reduce HIV infection and to combat the impact of AIDS on their lives through behavioural changes that challenge established negative notions of masculinity, testing and treatment. Sonke Gender Justice is one of the organisations that are driving the policy. Sonke’s Communications Associate, Khopotso Bodibe, spoke to executive director, Dean Peacock, and asked him why this effort is so important.
