In his most recent blog post, Teaching Men and Boys to Understand How Some Performances of Masculinity Compromise Lives, Sonke’s Board Chair Professor Kopano Ratele argues that “as a society we find it difficult to hold the seemingly incompatible ideas that young black males can be both victims and perpetrators, at once violators and violated.”
An op-ed by Sonke’s Mbuyiselo Botha, Dean Peacock and Czerina Patel has been published by South Africa’s Mail & Guardian newspaper. The authors argue that the government must stop paying mere lip service to rooting out gender-based violence. Click the link to read the article online.

South Africa’s leading Afrikaans newspaper, Die Burger, has published an article covering Sonke’s Beyond the Bars One Man Can group. The story follows Thandisizwe, one of the leading members of the Beyond the Bars team. It includes a poem, in English, by Thandisizwe.
South Africa’s weekly Mail & Guardian newspaper has highlighted Sonke’s work in prisons in an article on 28 March 2013 about the prevalence of sexual assault in prisons.
Sonke’s work on positive, involved fatherhood with MenCare was featured in two full-page newspaper articles on March 27th, one in Pretoria News and one in The Star.

The UK’s Guardian newspaper, among the most widely read and influential newspapers worldwide, yesterday published a long article covering the Sonke-ProMundo IMAGES research in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The article comments on the disturbing results of the research: that one in three men admit to committing sexual violence, and three-quarters of men believe that women who do not dress ‘respectfully’ are ‘asking to be raped’.
