    In September 2021, Pact was awarded the five-year Civil Society and Media – Strengthened Together and Advancing in New Directions (CSM-STAND) for Africa and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) program by USAID. The Regional Leader with Associates Award (LWA) aims to foster independent civic forces; enhance civic engagement; and build vibrant, resilient, and self-reliant civil society and media sectors that cultivate more pluralistic, democratic societies. To reach this goal, CSM-STAND designs and implements innovative and adaptive civil society and media programs, advances trans-regional learning, and develops next-generation, sustainable technical resources that positively influence wider practice within the civil society and media sectors. The CSM-STAND consortium is comprised of leading global, regional, and technical partners with extensive practical experience and knowledge of fundamental principles, key issues, current practices, and emerging trends in the DRG community.

    About the position:

    In partnership with Pact under the CSM – STAND, Sonke Gender Justice is seeking to employ a Community Mobiliser-Capacity Development to be based in Maseru/Lesotho on a two-year USAID Khutlo Activity. Khutlo aims to contribute to reducing stigma, discrimination, and violence against LGBTQI+ communities, as well as cishet women and girls, and strengthening the capacity of civil society to advocate for LGBTQI+ rights and provide inclusive quality gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, mitigation, and response services. This goal is underpinned by two mutually reinforcing objectives, namely,

    1. To increase civil society coordination and capacities to apply behavioural science principles that engage and empower communities to reduce GBV against LGBTQI+ people and cishet women and girls and
    2. To strengthen the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) to provide inclusive, high-quality GBV response services.

    Conduct Capacity Development Activities

    • Support the Khutlo’s Capacity Development interventions with Local Partners.
    • Support network analysis, capacity assessments, and LMPS CGPU Change Action Plan.
    • Work closely with partners to incorporate Capacity Development approaches and trainings to empower Local Partners and CSOs.

    Improve CGPU GBV Referral Networks

    • Engage LMPS CGPU and local partners to review and update referral pathways.
    • Develop GBV referral tools.

    Support analysis of existing institutional and technical capacities of LMPS CGPU

    • Support capacity assessment of the LMPS CGPU.
    • Support development of Capacity Development Plan and conduct Capacity Development for LMPS CGPU.

    Support LMPS CGPU to implement its Change Action Plan to improve institutional capacity and performance

    • Collaborate with LMPS CGPU in development of Change Action Plan (CAP) Activities.
    • Facilitate and Implement Change Action Plan (CAP) activities for the LMPS.

    Support Launch of Social Behavioral Change advocacy initiatives for GBV prevention

    • Organise a stakeholder workshop for development an advocacy strategy
    • Conduct consultative workshops with local CSOs, relevant government ministries and parliament portfolio committees.
    • Work with the GESI Advisor to Support facilitation of the endorsement and intergration of the advocacy strategy.

    Facilitation of workshops

    • Assist with the facilitation of select Capacity Development and Mobilisation sessions and other Sonke workshops for social norms change.
    • Assist with preparations for trainings logistics.

    IEC talks

    • Co-facilitate IEC talks within the different places in the community  and on radio programs.
    • Distributing IEC materials on gender-based violence prevention i.e. pamphlets, infographics, and other related materials.

    Reporting

    • Develop and compile reports for all activities undertaken.
    • Adhere to strict reporting requirements and timelines.

    Qualifications and experience

    • A diploma or any other tertiary qualification in social sciences would be advantageous.
    • Significant experience with community mobilisation, facilitation, writing field reports, liaison with the M&E office, and people management.
    • Experience working in the areas of gender equality, gender-based violence, LGBTQI+ Communities, human rights, including working with girls.
    • Must be willing to travel at least 20-30% of the time.

    Desired Interpersonal Skills

    • Ability to write compelling field reports.
    • Fluent in English (written and spoken) and Sesotho languages. 
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Skills and experience in feminism and the supervision of volunteers.
    • Demonstrated experience working with LGBTQI+, women/girls and other community members.

    • Lead implementation of an Integrated Development Strategy for the Lesotho Associate Award to ensure adequate planning and implementation of GESI/DEI programming.
    • Monitor and support the implementation of the Integrated Development Strategy throughout the lifecycle of the USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity.
    • Support the Research, Monitoring evaluation, and Learning.
    • Develop/Adapt the safeguarding approach for the USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity.
    • Attend, give input on and coordinate the GESI/DEI components for USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity stakeholders, partners and sub-grantees.
    • Work with the Sonke GESI Advisors/Specialist and RMEL Specialist to develop, curate and support a Community of Practice around GESI/DEI in Lesotho.
    • Support the Sonke GESI Advisors in tracking the effective implementation of the Integrated Development Strategy, safeguarding approach and related activities.
    • Represent Sonke as the GESI/DEI expert on related USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activities, including giving input on technical strategies, the learning agenda and public event.
    • Help identify GESI-related gaps in the USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity and in the works of sub-grantees.
    • Participate and present in the CSM STAND GESI community of Practice
    • Build a Lesotho GESI Community of Practice for partners and sub-grantees.
    • Identify GESI-specific learning priorities and actively engage in shared learning around GESI-related themes.
    • Craft GESI-sensitive learning agenda questions, action plans, and methods for USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity, partners and sub-grantees, in close coordination with the RMEL Specialist and Sonke GESI Advisors, ensuring that USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity prioritizes meaningful mainstreaming of diversity and inclusion across the learning activities of sub-grantees.
    • Establish GESI focal points across USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity sub-grantees.

    2. Support the technical capacity building of USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity on GESI/DEI work.

    • Develop/Adopt training and learning materials related to GESI/DEI and its interface with Sonke’s existing materials e.g. One Man Can, Gender Transformation, Safeguarding etc.
    • Implement quarterly/bi-annual training on GESI and support the learning of the USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity in the field, including providing updates on trends and developments in GESI/DEI work
    • Give input as needed on GESI/DEI for the full management team to support effective GESI-transformative programming of USAID/Lesotho Khutlo Activity.

    Qualifications and experience

    • An advanced degree in a relevant field, including at least an Honours in social sciences, with a preference for gender studies as a core subject. Studies should have provided a strong grounding in gender, social justice, sociology, political science, public health, and/or human rights. A Master of Public Health will be an added advantage
    • At least 5 years of proven experience in civil society, with a focus on enhancing gender equality, social inclusion, and diversity outcomes on projects (especially through applying intersectional feminism to diversity and inclusion work with a focus on LGBTIQ+ rights, race, class, ethnic and migration)
    • At least 1-2 years of proven experience of efficiently supporting GESI/DEI work on bilateral-funded project, with a preference for direct experience with USAID.
    • Experience in feminist thought and praxis, with demonstrated commitment to principles of feminism and feminist leadership.
    • Experience of working with multiple internal and external stakeholders – experience of working with community-based stakeholders and added advantage.
    • Significant experience with at least two of the following technical areas, i.e. gender justice, diversity and inclusion, health and human rights.
    • Must be willing to travel at least 20-30% of the time.

    Desired Interpersonal Skills

    • Must be a persuasive communicator with excellent writing, editing and public speaking skills in English and Sesotho.
    • Proven ability to excel as a collegial member of a diverse team and in working in a multicultural cross-continental working environment;
    • Excellent diplomatic and problem-solving abilities, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to engage in and contribute to on-going socio-political debates.

    About the position:

    In partnership with Pact under the CSM – STAND, Sonke Gender Justice is seeking to employ a Community Mobiliser-Social Behaviour Change to be based in Maseru/Lesotho on a two-year USAID Khutlo Activity. Khutlo aims to contribute to reducing stigma, discrimination, and violence against LGBTQI+ communities, as well as cishet women and girls, and strengthening the capacity of civil society to advocate for LGBTQI+ rights and provide inclusive quality gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, mitigation, and response services. This goal is underpinned by two mutually reinforcing objectives, namely,

    1. To increase civil society coordination and capacities to apply behavioural science principles that engage and empower communities to reduce GBV against LGBTQI+ people and cishet women and girls and
    2. To strengthen the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) to provide inclusive, high-quality GBV response services.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    Community Mapping and Mobilisation

    • Mobilize the communities to participate in the program implementation.
    • Mobilize the communities to participate in trainings and other related activities that seek to provide knowledge, skills, and motivation to promote gender equality and prevention of GBV.
    • Assist with the identification of potential project partners within those communities, such as CBOs, and religious institutions through a community mapping exercise.

    Support Engagement of Traditional and Religious Leaders and Government Stakeholders to build Program Trust

    • Conduct mapping of local partners, traditional and religious leaders.
    • Convene bi-monthly dialogues and engagements with traditional and religious leaders.
    • Develop a job aid on how to work with and engage traditional and religious leaders.

    Community Events, Action Teams & CBO’s

    • Work with one Community Action Team (CAT) and other Community Based Organizations to carry out messages of the project.
    • Support Community action team activities, working with the Senior Trainer.
    • Attend all stakeholder meetings with or on behalf of the Senior Trainer.
    • Assist with the facilitation of community events such as door-to-door campaigns, mass mobilisation, community gatherings etc.

    IEC talks

    • Co-facilitate IEC talks within the different places in the community and on radio programs.
    • Distributing IEC materials on gender-based violence prevention i.e. pamphlets, infographics, and other related materials.

    Reporting

    • Develop and compile reports for all activities undertaken.
    • Adhere to strict reporting requirements and timelines.

    Qualifications and experience

    • A diploma or any other tertiary qualification in social sciences would be advantageous.
    • Significant experience with community mobilisation, facilitation, writing field reports, liaison with the M&E office, and people management.
    • Experience working in the areas of gender equality, gender-based violence, LGBTQI Communities, human rights, including working with girls.
    • Must be willing to travel at least 20-30% of the time.

    About the Position

    The Resource Mobilisation Specialist works to support resource mobilization, income generation, donor relations and donor reporting.  In consultation with the Resource Mobilisation (RM) Manager, the Resource Mobilization Specialist will support the implementation of the resource mobilization strategy for the organisation. 

    Key duties and responsibilities

    1. Resource mobilisation strategy

    • In collaboration with the RM Manager, implement the resource mobilisation strategy for the organisation
    • In collaboration with the RM Manager, develop an annual work plan that is aligned to the resource mobilisation strategy
    • Identify, in consultation with the RM Manager, new institutional, government, corporate and private donors.

    2. Proposal development

    • Work closely with the RM Manager and programme staff before a proposal is developed to strategise around potential projects and processes.

    • Stay abreast of the literature and developments in the field to ensure that proposals are current and to identify new opportunities.

    3. Income generation

    • In consultation with the RM Manager, senior management team and unit managers, develop Sonke’s sub-grants and fee for service portfolios.
    • In consultation with the RM manager, develop a work plan to roll out income generation activities through the Training Institute.
    • Work with the unit managers to identify new sub-grant opportunities and prepare new proposals, including project budgets, aligned to sub-grant opportunities.

    4. Donor reporting and relations  

    • Support the RM Manager with regular communication with donors, including distribution of Sonke’s newsletter and other relevant materials.
    • Support RM stewardship of donor representatives by inviting them to participate in project activities, where appropriate.
    • Support the RM Manager to host an annual donor meeting.
    • Coordinate with the RM Manager to conduct an annual donor survey.

    About the Position

    The Research, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of Sonke’s comprehensive monitoring and evaluation system. Working with the Chief of Party and RMEL Unit Manager, the RMEL Specialist will develop and implement monitoring and evaluation tools, processes and reports for USAID funded Khutlo project in the Kingdom of Lesotho.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    The RMEL Specialist will be responsible for:

    1. Monitoring and Evaluation

    • Lead with the planning, implementation and development of M&E management functions in the organization viz:
    • Strengthen Khutlo’s systems, tools and processes.
    • Define key performance indicators and monitor them throughout the institutional project implementation period.
    • Propose strategies to promote the use of data to inform project programming.
    • Assist and provide input to the project plan and results-based framework.
    • Provide input and clarification on M&E processes during project inception meetings.
    • Work closely with project team to plan for process and outcomes.
    • Oversee the collection and inputting of M&E data in Sonke database and or USAID/PEPFAR system (DIS, DHIS and DATIM etc.).

    The Regional Communications and Social Media Coordinator position aims to gradually achieve superior online community engagement and exposure by strategically strengthening all aspects of the social media marketing roadmap. This position will use social media platforms to promote and maintain the visibility for the Power To Youth, PTY programme. In addition to working with Power To Youth, this position will render their time and skills to other work as requested by Sonke Gender Justice.

    Key Performance Areas

    The Regional Communication and Social Media Coordinator will be responsible for:

    1. Reporting and content production

    • Write narrative reports and/or newsletters on the organization’s activities to accompany digital media products.
    • Produce social media posts that document the work of PTY and its partners to describe important developments related to work on gender equality, health and human rights.
    • Draft media statements and op-eds and circulate on social media.
    • Produce high-quality graphics, layouts and illustrations for various communication uses.
    • Work on campaigns and other joint activities with network partners.

    2. Social media engagement

    • Build and execute social media strategy through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging, and audience identification.
    • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content (original texts, images, or videos) that build meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action.
    • Set up and optimize organizational pages within each platform to increase the visibility of our social content.
    • Moderate all user-generated content in line with the moderation policy for each community.

    Educational Requirements

    About the position

    Sonke provides sub-awards to external organisations as part of its project implementation activities and provides funding to these organisations for project activities.  The Sub-Awards Specialist will be responsible for managing the sub-award process with a focus on reducing risks to Sonke by assessing the partners’ ability to implement the project, manage funding and to work with project managers to monitor sub-recipients and assist with capacity building.

    Specific responsibilities:

    1. Sub-award review

    • Review donor requirements for sub-award management and develop a plan to ensure compliance with donor requirements;
    • Review proposed sub-award budgets and programme activities to determine if budgeted amounts and timelines are appropriate.

    2. Sub-award assessments

    • Review and update sub-recipient pre-award assessment tools and operating procedures to ensure tools are appropriate;
    • Determine the most appropriate and cost-effective method of conducting the pre-award assessment;
    • Conduct pre-award assessments for each sub-award and determine risk rating for each sub-award;  
    • Establish monitoring and follow-up requirements based on the results of the pre-award;
    • Conduct pre-award assessments based on donor and Sonke’s operating procedures;
    • Determine appropriate sub-award mechanisms for contractual agreements with partners;  
    • Work with the project manager to identify where capacity building or technical assistance is required; 
    • Work with sub-recipients to address high-risk issues from the pre-award assessment;
    • Monitor, develop and implement corrective action plans for sub-recipients; and
    • Conduct follow-up post-award assessments to keep assessment ratings current.

    3. Training and capacity building

    • Provide orientation to sub-recipients on management of funds, processing of documentation and reporting, as well as preparations for audits; 
    • Provide technical assistance and capacity building to address risk in relation to pre-award assessments and project deliverables; and
    • Provide training to Sonke staff on sub-award management procedures.

    4. Sub-award implementation and monitoring

    • Review financial reports from sub-recipients, ensuring accuracy and supporting documents are provided;   
    • Monitor sub-award spending against budget to ensure sub-awards are not overspent and variances in spending are not excessive. Ensure variances are explained and documented;
    • Monitor sub-recipients’ compliance with terms and conditions of sub-awards;
    • Make recommendations and take action in instances of non-compliance to reduce risks to Sonke; and  
    • Obtain donor authorisations for specific project issues such as procurement of equipment and travel.

    5. Sub-award close out

    • Manage close-out process of sub-awards including timely submission of final reports by sub-recipients;
    • Review final reports and ensure timely submission of final donor reports;
    • Obtain donor authorisation for disposition of equipment and ensure documentation is obtained for transfer of equipment; and  
    • Arrange for safe-guarding or transfer of files in possession of sub-recipients related to the sub-award.

    6. Filing, reporting and compliance

    • Ensure sub-award files are complete and accurate, including documents on pre- and post-award assessments, signed sub-award agreements, budgets, narrative and financial reports & audit reports;
    • Provide timely and accurate donor reports to appropriate staff and to donors;
    • Ensure procedures are in place to comply with donor and Sonke compliance requirements;Participate in regular sub-award meetings; and
    • Maintain a sub-award schedule detailing all compliance issues.

    Qualifications and experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance/business related discipline. Advanced degree would be advantageous. 
    • Minimum 5 years equivalent experience in a similar capacity in grant management or sub-award management;

The Regional Campaigns and Advocacy Specialist will help develop and support the implementation of the MEA campaigns and advocacy strategy and priorities, facilitate Movement-wide strategic advocacy engagement, including planning and coordinating effective engagement in key inter-governmental processes. S/he is responsible for providing technical support and leadership to MEA on campaign areas, advocacy, support and leading MEA and partners in influencing the implementation of relevant international, regional, and national level frameworks for the protection of women and girls’ rights, across the MEA thematic areas.

    Key technical areas under the leadership of this role include joint evidence-based advocacy on the MEA campaigns, strengthening the capacities of MEA partners and supporting their advocacy initiatives and actions, networking and collaboration with relevant stakeholders and networks/alliances/working groups at local, national, regional, and international level and introducing social accountability mechanisms.

    Key duties

    1. MenEngage Africa (MEA) Campaigns

    • Through a co-creation process, design, lead the development and or implementation of a regional campaign strategy on work in tandem with the regional strategic plan.
    • Support MEA partners in the implementation of the MEA campaigns at national level.
    • In collaboration with the communications unit, coordinate the development of campaign material and tools to support campaign roll out and implementation.
    • Coordinate capacity strengthening to partners where necessary on areas related to MEA’s campaigns and advocacy.

    2. Evidence-based advocacy

    • Lead the development and implementation of MEA’s Advocacy Strategy and campaigns.
    • Identify advocacy issues and lead/guide on evidence-based advocacy actions of MEA.
    • Conduct policy scans and analysis on engaging men and boys in various policy documents on thematic areas forming part of MEA’s work. 
    • Coordinate and support MEA partners in preparation and development of accountability reports such as shadow reports on regional and international instruments such as CEDAW, Maputo Protocol etc. 
    • Submission of conference abstracts highlighting the different campaign initiatives with MEA partners.
    • Work in alliance with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), particularly with the women Activists, advocacy groups, youths, LGBTQ+ movements, and other relevant partners to advocate on identified issues.
    • Develop and disseminate advocacy briefs, position papers, press statements, newsletter articles as required for different advocacy interventions.
    • Support advocacy for development of MEA National Action Plan (NAP) on UNSCR 1325 and GBV and support country partners in the monitoring of the implementation.
    • Introduce, support, and build on social accountability mechanisms like Score Cards for MEA countries to hold their leaders accountable on the enforcement of the relevant policies and frameworks.
    • Plan and implement advocacy related media campaigns including relevant capacity development for media, media activities such as investigative journalism, social media campaigns among others.
    • Periodic reporting in line with various platforms where Sonke/MEA have observer status.

    3. Strengthening of capabilities of stakeholders

    • Communicate effectively with MEA partners to monitor the implementation of campaigns and advocacy strategy, identify project or capacity gaps and advocacy issues, identify/anticipate emerging and/or unanticipated risks and support partners in addressing these accordingly. 
    • Provide advice to partners in the development and implementation of their advocacy strategies, and in specific advocacy campaigns.
    • Identify priority human rights and gender justice initiatives and support their implementation.
    • Work closely with other specialists to ensure synergies with other result areas, to identify critical issues in and develop advocacy plan, generate evidence, and implement advocacy activities to address them.

    4. Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning

    • Work closely with RMEL unit to develop advocacy Impact Measurement tools and ensure regional advocacy activities are measured. 
    • With support from the RMEL team, train MEA partners in monitoring and evaluation of advocacy activities.
    • Contribute to generating and documenting lessons learnt and knowledge on all advocacy activities, writing policy briefs and papers.
    • Active contribution and participation in knowledge management processes and products, under the leadership of the Unit Manager.

    5. Networking

    • In coordination with the Unit Manager, represent Sonke, MEA, and regional projects in relevant advocacy forums.
    • Collaborate with relevant Civil Society actors at national and international levels and networks on the various international instruments that guide our work.
    • Establish and maintain networks and alliances with national, regional and international advocacy/coalition organizations and participate in relevant working groups and networks.
    • Participate in relevant MEA advocacy platforms.
    • Coordinate the MEA Advocacy working group.

    6. General

    • Participate in internal meetings per year.
    • Contribute to the development of funding proposals when required.
    • Submit monthly compliance reports.
    • Be available to assist with Advocacy work in other projects.
    • Ad hoc activities, as agreed with the supervisor.

    Requirements

    • The ideal applicant must hold a bachelor’s degree in law, Human rights, or international relations. A postgraduate Diploma or Masters in this field is a MUST.
    • Practical experience in advancing advocacy initiatives on issues of GBV, SRHR, Child Rights, Peace and Security and women’s rights.
    • Experience in capacity development on advocacy processes and tools, supporting remote-based policy advocacy strategies development, including providing technical guidance. Working knowledge of existing regional policy work and research being done in Africa will be an advantage.  
    • Excellent teamwork, networking, communication, and collaboration skills with a wide range of actors, both within the Sonke, MEA and International networks, including MenEngage Global and other actors on several deliverables.

    About the position

    In partnership with Pact under the CSM – STAND, Sonke Gender Justice is seeking to employ the Chief of Party (COP) to be based in Maseru/Lesotho on a two-year USAID Khutlo Activity. Khutlo aims to contribute to reducing stigma, discrimination, and violence against LGBTQI+ communities, as well as cishet women and girls, and strengthening the capacity of civil society to advocate for LGBTQI+ rights and provide inclusive quality gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, mitigation, and response services. This goal is underpinned by two mutually reinforcing objectives, namely,

    1. To increase civil society coordination and capacities to apply behavioral science principles that engage and empower communities to reduce GBV against LGBTQI+ people and cishet women and girls and
    2. To strengthen the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS) to provide inclusive, high-quality GBV response services.

    The COP will be responsible for technical leadership and the overall management and operations of the Khutlo Activity. As a seasoned development expert, with LGBTQI+ rights as a technical focus area, the COP will serve as the primary point of contact with USAID Lesotho and supervise high-quality project implementation, with a focus on achieving the project goals and USAID/Lesotho development objectives.

    The COP will take a leadership role in coordination of all activities across all relevant parties including USAID, the Government of Lesotho, civil society organizations, key stakeholders, and implementing partners. The COP will also oversee all project staff and sub-partners for results-oriented planning, leadership, and coordination of project activities. This position is part of Sonke’s full management team and works closely with other senior managers at Sonke.

    Specific responsibilities include

    1. Management

    • Ensure high-quality, results-oriented technical programming through hands-on guidance and support grounded in the project’s strategic objectives and approved annual workplans – with a specific focus on enhancing the objectives of the Khutlo Activity.
    • Serve as the primary liaison with the USAID Agreement Officer’s Representative (AOR) on management and technical matters.
    • Ensure compliance with USAID rules/regulations and Sonke processes. Supervise and provide strategic direction to Khutlo activity staff working on key project deliverables.
    • Manage and coordinate the implementation of activities across project partners, ensuring successful integration of activities.

    2. Technical Oversight

    • Ensure that the project meets stated goals, outcomes, benchmarks, and reporting requirements and oversee complexity-aware monitoring, evaluation, and learning plan.
    • Take a leadership role in coordination among USAID and key stakeholders, including partners, government stakeholders, civil society, and other USAID projects.
    • Oversee the quality of research, monitoring, evaluation and learning activities for the Khutlo activity, ensuring that deliverables are met on time and in-line with existing targets.

    3. Financial and Risk Management

    • Ensure implementation of the project in line with budgeted resources and in compliance with USAID and Sonke policies.
    • Oversee risk management and risk mitigation, including as it relates to safeguarding issues, for the Khutlo Activity, its staff, partners, and beneficiaries.

    Qualifications and experience

    • Advanced degree in gender, public health, developmental studies, or a related field. A Master’s degree would be an advantage.
    • Skilled and experienced program manager, with at least 8 years in project implementation and management with an understanding of bilateral donor funding and technical knowledge and experience of USAID-funded programs in Lesotho and or neighbouring countries.
    • Proven ability to facilitate effective processes and deliver results.
    • The successful candidate will have technical expertise in the gender justice and human rights field related to the rights of sexual minorities.
    • At least 7-10 years of experience in civil society, with a content focus on gender and LGBTQI+ rights and freedoms.

    The Regional Projects Unit (RPU) Senior Trainer will report to the GTA Specialist and will provide technical capacity support on gender norms transformative programming to the Power to Youth programme, MenEngage Africa and Sonke’s partners in the region. Some of the key deliverables for the incumbent includes formative research and design, capacity building in gender norms transformation through a comprehensive training of  trainers (ToT) methodology and qualitative research, focusing on both individual change as well as the impact of research and country partner interventions.

    Key duties

    1. Overall support towards planning, development and implementation of the project

    • Development of training curriculum and IEC materials.
    • Training and mentoring.
    • Community mobilization.
    • Provision and distribution of project materials.

    About the position

    The Office Administrator will be responsible for assisting with the smooth running of the office through effective office management. They will do this by answering the phone, directing calls, welcoming visitors, ensuring that all equipment is in working condition, that the organization has sufficient stationary and other consumables on hand and that the office is well maintained and all relevant issues have been communicated to the landlord. They will ensure that all staff queries regarding IT are resolved as soon as possible. They will especially work closely with and provide support to the office coordinator and finance unit.

    Specific duties and responsibilities:

    The Office Administrator will be responsible for administrative tasks in relation to the following; viz;

    1. Reception

    • Answers incoming telephone calls, determines the purpose of calls and forward calls to appropriate staff;
    • Takes and delivers messages or transfer calls to voicemail when staff is unavailable;
    • Answers any questions about Sonke and if unable to; refer to appropriate staff;
    • Book boardroom/s and arrange catering when requested;

    • Assist Office Coordinator with co-ordination of office space, office security and security systems in the organization.

    • Assist finance with digitizing documentation for submission to donors
    • Save all payment requisitions on the shared drive.

    4. Support for travel arrangements

    • Assist with submitting travel arrangements to the travel agency when the Office Coordinator needs assistance.

    5. Maintain asset register

    • Assist with maintenance of the asset register of the organization as follows:
      • Tag all assets with a unique number
      • List all assets in an office and attach the list on the back of the door
      • Add and remove assets as is necessary
      • Make recommendations for disposals
      • Once a year in March complete a physical count of all assets in all the offices and update the asset register and sign off together with the Finance Manager prior to the start of the audit.
    • Track and maintain an asset schedule for all assets given to staff when they join Sonke and returned to Sonke when they leave Sonke.

    About the Position

    The Resource Mobilisation Specialist works to support resource mobilization, income generation, donor relations and donor reporting. In consultation with the Resource Mobilisation (RM) Manager, the Resource Mobilization Specialist will support the implementation of the resource mobilization strategy for the organisation.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    1. Resource mobilisation strategy

    • In collaboration with the RM Manager, implement the resource mobilisation strategy for the organisation
    • In collaboration with the RM Manager, develop an annual work plan that is aligned to the resource mobilisation strategy
    • Identify, in consultation with the RM Manager, new institutional, government, corporate and private donors.

    2. Proposal development

    • Work closely with the RM Manager and programme staff before a proposal is developed to strategise around potential projects and processes.

    • Stay abreast of the literature and developments in the field to ensure that proposals are current and to identify new opportunities. 

    3. Income generation

    • In consultation with the RM Manager, senior management team and unit managers, develop Sonke’s sub-grants and fee for service portfolios. 
    • In consultation with the RM manager, develop a work plan to roll out income generation activities through the Training Institute. 
    • Work with the unit managers to identify new sub-grant opportunities and prepare new proposals, including project budgets, aligned to sub-grant opportunities.

    4. Donor reporting and relations

    • Support the RM Manager with regular communication with donors, including distribution of Sonke’s newsletter and other relevant materials.
    • Support RM stewardship of donor representatives by inviting them to participate in project activities, where appropriate. 
    • Support the RM Manager to host an annual donor meeting. 
    • Coordinate with the RM Manager to conduct an annual donor survey. 
    • Support and manage the donor reporting schedule and ensure that project staff and all unit managers and senior management are aware of all upcoming report deadlines. 
    • Work with the CSI Manager to improve and develop communications material needed for portfolio development of income-generating portfolios (sub-grants and training institute) such as brochures, newsletter articles, etc.

    5. Administration and database management

    About the position

    Sonke provides sub-awards to external organisations as part of its project implementation activities and provides funding to these organisations for project activities. The Sub-Awards Specialist will be responsible for managing the sub-award process with a focus on reducing risks to Sonke by assessing the partners’ ability to implement the project, manage funding and to work with project managers to monitor sub-recipients and assist with capacity building.

    Specific responsibilities:

    1. Sub-award review

    • Review donor requirements for sub-award management and develop a plan to ensure compliance with donor requirements;
    • Review proposed sub-award budgets and programme activities to determine if budgeted amounts and timelines are appropriate.

    2. Sub-award assessments

    • Review and update sub-recipient pre-award assessment tools and operating procedures to ensure tools are appropriate;
    • Determine the most appropriate and cost-effective method of conducting the pre-award assessment;
    • Conduct pre-award assessments for each sub-award and determine risk rating for each sub-award;  
    • Establish monitoring and follow-up requirements based on the results of the pre-award;
    • Conduct pre-award assessments based on donor and Sonke’s operating procedures;
    • Determine appropriate sub-award mechanisms for contractual agreements with partners;  
    • Work with the project manager to identify where capacity building or technical assistance is required; 
    • Work with sub-recipients to address high-risk issues from the pre-award assessment;

    • Conduct follow-up post-award assessments to keep assessment ratings current.

    3. Training and capacity building

    • Provide orientation to sub-recipients on management of funds, processing of documentation and reporting, as well as preparations for audits; 
    • Provide technical assistance and capacity building to address risk in relation to pre-award assessments and project deliverables; and
    • Provide training to Sonke staff on sub-award management procedures.

    4. Sub-award implementation and monitoring

    • Review financial reports from sub-recipients, ensuring accuracy and supporting documents are provided;   
    • Monitor sub-award spending against budget to ensure sub-awards are not overspent and variances in spending are not excessive. Ensure variances are explained and documented;
    • Monitor sub-recipients’ compliance with terms and conditions of sub-awards;
    • Make recommendations and take action in instances of non-compliance to reduce risks to Sonke; and  
    • Obtain donor authorisations for specific project issues such as procurement of equipment and travel.

    5. Sub-award close out

    • Manage close-out process of sub-awards including timely submission of final reports by sub-recipients;
    • Review final reports and ensure timely submission of final donor reports;
    • Obtain donor authorisation for disposition of equipment and ensure documentation is obtained for transfer of equipment; and  
    • Arrange for safe-guarding or transfer of files in possession of sub-recipients related to the sub-award.

    6. Filing, reporting and compliance

    • Ensure sub-award files are complete and accurate, including documents on pre- and post-award assessments, signed sub-award agreements, budgets, narrative and financial reports & audit reports;
    • Provide timely and accurate donor reports to appropriate staff and to donors;

    The Deputy Finance Manager will assist the Finance Unit Manager in ensuring the existence of sound financial management systems and the adherence to policies and procedures.  The Deputy Finance Manager will work closely with the Finance Manager to provide input and assistance throughout the finance cycle from budgeting and planning to actual expenditure, reporting and audit preparations;  will assist in the development, coordination and controlling of the budgeting process; monitor the results by providing all necessary financial and narrative reports for funders and donor organizations, the board and SMT and will assist in the overall financial management and planning including cash flow projections, payments, project financial reports, donor reporting, donor audits, organizational audit and sub-awards audits.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    The Deputy Finance will be responsible for: 

    1. Budgeting

    • In consultation with the Finance Unit Manager assist with the preparation for meetings convened in October of each year to assess programme plans for the following year, forecasting the flow of funds and budgeting expenditure for each programme.  Utilizing the above process, draft an organizational budget for the following year.
    • Assist in providing informed financial updates, reports and advice and ensure that any critical operational issues related to finance are flagged and addressed. 
    • Assist budget holders with the drafting of budgets. 
    • Monitor budgets for over and under expenditure for specific projects and donors.

    2. Cash flow forecast

    • Assist the budget holders to draft cash-flow forecasts for the upcoming months.
    • Ensure that funds are transferred between investment and current accounts on a monthly basis as needed.
    • Ensure that invoices due to the donor has been processed and submitted. 
    • Ensure timeous follow-up on outstanding invoices.

    3. Accounting and reporting

    • Ensure that Sonke complies with the Companies Act 2008 and with the Companies Regulations, IFRS and the Code of Good Governance for NPO’s
    • Assist in preparing financial reports for Board meetings

    4. Donor financial reports

    • Check GL to ensure accuracy in terms of donor allocation

    • Assist Financial Manager to refine financial systems to ensure proper and transparent financial management in line with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)

    The Civil Society and Media – Strengthened Together and Advancing in New Directions (CSM-STAND) project works closely with USAID Missions, Regional Bureaus and Independent Offices to leverage and strengthen civil society and media’s capacities to credibly represent citizen interests and hold governments accountable through advocacy, oversight and outreach. It aims to catalyze local, regional and cross-regional approaches that foster independent civic forces, enhance civic engagement, and build vibrant, resilient and sustainable civil society and media sectors.

    Under the CSM-STAND project, Sonke seeks to recruit a Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Specialist to be based in its Johannesburg or Cape Town offices, or to work from Maseru, Lesotho. The GESI Specialist will be responsible for supporting the design, implementation and monitoring of gender equality, social inclusion and diversity-related programming under CSM-STAND and across the broader scope of the organization’s work.

    Specific responsibilities include:

    1. Supporting the integration of gender equality and social inclusion across the CSM-STAND projects in their programme design, implementation and monitoring.
    2. Working closely with the Programmes Director to develop a GESI/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)-related Community of Practice for the CSM-STAND project;
    3. Developing GESI/DEI related material including training manuals and learning tools;
    4. Conducting GESI/DEI training for different internal and external stakeholders;
    5. Supporting the development and uptake of safeguarding approaches on the CSM-STAND projects; and 
    6. Providing technical expertise as needed for GESI-related strategic planning, thought-leadership and programming more broadly at Sonke.

    Qualifications and experience

    • An advanced degree in a relevant field, including at least an Honours in social sciences, with a preference for gender studies as a core subject. Studies should have provided a strong grounding in gender, social justice, sociology, political science, health, and/or human rights.
    • At least four years of proven experience in civil society, with a focus on enhancing gender equality, social inclusion and diversity outcomes on projects (especially through applying intersectional feminism to diversity and inclusion work with a focus on LGBTIQ+ rights, race, class, ethnic and migration)
    • At least 1-2 years of proven experience of efficiently supporting GESI/DEI work on bilateral-funded project, with a preference for direct experience with USAID.
    • Experience in feminist thought and praxis, with demonstrated commitment to principles of feminism and feminist leadership.

    About the position

    Sonke seeks a Chief of Party to be based in Maseru, Lesotho. The COP will be responsible for technical leadership and the overall management and operations of the Khutlo Activity. The Khutlo Activity is a two-year project to support the realization of improved services, protection and responsiveness for LGBTIQ+ persons in Lesotho. The project has two main objectives, namely:

    • Increased coordination and capacity of civil society to apply behavior change principles that engage and empower communities to eliminate all forms of human rights violations and gender-based violence against LGBTQI+ communities , and
    • Improve the capacity of Global Fund COVID-19 Response Mechanisms sub-recipients to provide inclusive high quality GBV response services in Lesotho

    As a seasoned development expert, with LGBTQI+ rights as a technical focus area, the COP will serve as the primary point of contact with USAID Lesotho and supervise high-quality project implementation, with a focus on achieving the project goals and USAID/Lesotho development objectives. The COP will take a leadership role in coordination of all activities across all relevant parties including: USAID, the Government of Lesotho, civil society organizations, key stakeholders, and implementing partners. The COP will also oversee all project staff and sub-partners for results oriented planning, leadership, and coordination of project activities. This position is part of Sonke’s full management team and works closely with other senior managers at Sonke.

    Specific responsibilities include:

    1. Management

    • Ensure high-quality, results-oriented technical programming through hands-on guidance and support grounded in the project’s strategic objectives and approved annual workplans – with a specific focus on enhancing the objectives of the Khutlo Activity
    • Serve as the primary liaison with the USAID Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) or Agreement Officer’s Representative (AOR) on management and technical matters,
    • Ensure compliance with USAID rules/regulations and Sonke processes. Supervise and provide strategic direction to Kutlo activity staff working on key project deliverables.
    • Manage and coordinate the implementation of activities across project partners, ensuring successful integration of activities

    2. Technical

    • Ensure that the project meets stated goals, outcomes, benchmarks, and reporting requirements and oversee complexity-aware monitoring, evaluation, and learning plan.
    • Take a leadership role in coordination among USAID and key stakeholders, including partners, government stakeholders, civil society, and other USAID projects
    • Oversee the quality of research, monitoring, evaluation and learning activities for the Khutlo activity, ensuring that deliverables are met on time and in-line with existing targets
    • Ensure integration of the Khutlo Activity with, and draw on, existing Sonke technical areas of expertise e.g. Community Education and Mobilisation campaigns, MenEngage Africa, and the gender transformative approach

    3. Financial and Risk Management

    • Oversee risk management and risk mitigation, including as it relates to safeguarding issues, for the Khutlo Activity, its staff, partners and beneficiaries.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Advanced degree in gender, public health, sociology or a related field. Master’s degree an advantage.
    • Skilled and experienced programme manager, with at least 5 years in programme and project management responsibility, with the proven ability to facilitate effective processes and deliver results. Experience working with USAID and advantage.
    • The successful candidate will have technical expertise in the gender justice and human rights field related to the rights of sexual minorities.

    About the Position

    The Credit Controller will be responsible for the full creditor’s function of the organization and ensure that all creditors (national and international) are paid accurately and timeously. The position requires the processing of reconciliations against supplier’s statements, capturing invoices onto Pastel Evolution, dealing with queries, ensure compliance with Sonke’s financial policies and procedures, assist with audits and financial reports.

    Specific responsibilities include:

    1. Payments / Accounts Payable

    1.1 Reconciliations

    • Perform supplier reconciliations in preparing requisitions for payment (Reconciliation of the supplier statement to the Supplier Ledger in Pastel and reconciliation of invoices to supplier statement.)
    • Reconcile purchase orders to invoices
    • Perform monthly supplier reconciliations to support all payments to approved suppliers (Reconciliation of the supplier statement to the supplier ledger in Pastel)

    1.2 Capturing

    • Perform supplier reconciliations in preparing requisitions for payment (Reconciliation of the supplier statement to the Supplier Ledger in Pastel and reconciliation of invoices to supplier statement.)

    • Ensure that suppliers are paid within agreed time frames

    1.4 Compliance, policies and procedures

    • Ensure implementation of Sonke’s accounting and financial systems, including establishing and monitoring internal controls.
    • Ensure that procurement policies are strictly adhered to
    • Obtain reserve bank approvals and ensure approvals are renewed before expiration.
    • Provide monthly creditors age analysis for review

    2. Reports

    • Support the preparation of internal and external financial reports.

    3. Auditing

    • Assist in the preparation of the annual audit as well as donor-specific audit.  Gathering of relevant documents as requested by the auditors.

    Experience and educational qualifications 

    • A tertiary qualification in Accounting or Bookkeeping; and/or short bookkeeping courses
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a finance unit performing creditors/accounts payable duties, preferable in a medium-sized NGO
    • Previous working experience on Pastel Evolution
    • Strong understanding of financial management principles
    • Experience with audit requirements

    About the Position

    The Finance Unit Manager is ultimately accountable for the efficient planning, management and reporting on the financial management of the organisation. The Finance Unit Manager will work closely with the Co-Executive Director (Operations) and SMT to provide guidance throughout the finance cycle from budgeting and planning to actual expenditure, reporting, and audit preparations.

    The Finance Unit Manager will develop, coordinate and control the budgeting process, and monitor the results by providing all necessary financial and narrative reports for funders and donor organisations, the board and SMT. It is the responsibility of the Finance Unit Manager to ensure the effective operations of the finance function and to identify high-risk areas and areas for improvement.

    The Finance Unit Manager plays a strategic role on the management team and will use their financial expertise to help ensure effective, ethical and prudent financial decision-making in the organisation.

    The Finance Unit Manager will also manage and coordinate the performance of the finance staff.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    1. Budgeting and cash flow forecast

    1.1 Budgeting and cash flow forecast

    • In consultation with the Co-Executive Director Operations convene a series of meetings in October each year to assess programme plans for the following year, forecasted flow of funds and budgeted expenditure for each programme. Based on this information, draft an organisational budget for the following year.
    • Give informed financial updates, reports and advice in quarterly management meetings and ensure that critical operational issues related to finance are flagged and resolved; 
    • Assist budget holders with drafting budgets;
    • Monitor budgets for over and under expenditure for specific projects and donors; and
    • Advise budget holders of over and under-expenditure monthly.

    1.2 Cash flow forecast

    • Assist the budget holders to draft cash-flow forecasts for the upcoming months.
    • Ensure that funds are transferred between investment and current accounts monthly as needed.
    • Ensure that invoices due to the donor has been processed and submitted.
    • Ensure timeous follow up on outstanding invoices
    • Monitor cash flow

    2. Accounting and Reporting

    2.1 Preparation and presentation at Board meetings

    • Ensure that Sonke complies with the Companies Act 2008 and with the Companies Regulations, IFRS and the Code of Good Governance for NPO’s
    • Provide reports and make presentations on finance issues for the Board meetings

    2.2 Donor financial reports

    • Check the general ledger to ensure accuracy in terms of donor allocation
    • Liaise with programme staff to ensure prompt payment, submission of accurate financial information, timely follow-up and error-free posting and record keeping
    • Draft donor financial reports according to donor requirement
    • Attend meetings with donors and brief budget holders where necessary
    • Liaise with donors where required
    • Ensure that donor reports are accurate and meet all donor deadlines

    2.3 Payments

    • Ensure that payment requisitions have all the correct authorizations and supporting documents and are coded.
    • Ensure that invoices are reconciled to the statements.
    • Ensure that all payments are loaded accurately and timeously on Nedbank.
    • Ensure that accurate payment schedules are prepared.
    • Ensure that all documents are stamped immediately after payments
    • Ensure that the preferred supplier database is updated by the Office Administrator on a regular basis

    2.4 Transaction Processing

    • Ensure that transactions are processed accurately and timeously.
    • Ensure that all advances are checked and reconciled before the next advance is paid.
    • The staff advance and credit card schedule is prepared and sent to managers twice a month.
    • All reconciliations are correct and completed on time.
    • Ensure that month end is completed by the 10th of the following month.

    2.5 Financial reports

    • Prepare internal and external financial reports
    • Prepare full analysis of the statement of financial position, statement of comprehensive income and other reports at each month end.

    2.6 Payroll

    • Draft a comparison of total cost to company, nett salaries, medical aid, pension and pensionable salaries against the previous month.
    • Check and authorize payroll
    • Ensure that all staff are paid by the 25th of each month

    2.7 Asset Register

    • Maintain the asset register.
    • Ensure that the asset register agrees to the information on Pastel Evolution
    • Ensure that the Office Co-ordinator conducts a physical inspection of all assets of the organization annually and support the office co-ordinator in this regard.
    • Ensure that the Office Co-ordinator and Administrator tags/ bar codes all assets and that the assets of the organization are physically listed at each office area.

    3. Compliance and financial policies and procedures

    3.1 Policies and procedures

    • Work to refine financial systems to ensure proper and transparent financial management in line with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)
    • Ensure financial policies and procedures are reviewed and updated at least annually and ensure monitoring of internal controls and compliance with these
    • Work with the Co-Executive Director Operations to develop and coordinate the annual workplan and budgeting process.
    • Ensure that the organisation is SARS compliant including with regards to Income Tax, VAT, UIF, and PAYE and that all submissions and payments are done by the due date.
    • Management of the cash flow of the organisation, together with control of all bank accounts and organisational credit cards
    • Coordinate payroll and ensure that staff are paid by the 25th of each month
    • Ensure timely processing and payment of all programme-related payments so that programme deliverables can be met as per grant requirements.
    • Ensure that financial reporting takes account of the provisions of all relevant funding contracts.
    • Ensure the provision of internal financial reports each month that include the following: Financial reports for the previous month as well as year-to-date showing expenses incurred, funds available and funds needed. This should include the SFP and SCI and Variance reports per donor.
    • Review of monthly reconciliations of all SFP accounts.
    • Ensure that staff adheres to the finance calendar.
    • Support the annual BEE verification process

    3.2 Compliance

    • Ensure compliance with the Sonke financial policies and procedures
    • Ensure compliance with donor contracts
    • Prepare for and attend inception meetings with project staff
    • Train staff on donor compliance relating to finance issues
    • Ensure that reports are submitted timeously as per donor requirements
    • Adhere to the donor tracking schedule
    • Always maintain a proper filing system on all awards
    • Call monthly meetings with budget holders to discuss the financial reports
    • Train budget holders and operation staff on compliance areas in the agreement

    4. Audit Management

    • Appoint and manage the relationship between the designated audit firm and Sonke and schedule and prepare for the annual audit to ensure records are up to date and on hand.
    • Ensure findings are communicated to the Co-Executive Directors and Board and ensure implementation of corrective action plans
    •  Coordinate with donors who require project audits, oversee quarterly internal audits and spot checks; and ensure prompt corrective action against findings
    • Check agreement and liaison with donor regarding terms of reference of audit
    • Request approval from donor on audit firm selected and terms of reference if so stipulated in the donor agreement
    • Contact external auditors on audit preparation and requirements

    5. People Management

    • When required, with the assistance of HR, recruit, select and induct new or replacement staff for the unit and ensure that all staff have a detailed job description.
    • Provide guidance to staff through positive leadership examples.
    • Actively manage the performance and development of staff through regular one-on-one meetings; participating in the bi-annual performance appraisals; providing recognition for extraordinary work and if necessary, addressing performance issues immediately and effectively;
      • Encourage staff to participate in their own development and help identify development initiatives and interventions;
      • Manage day-to-day HR issues such as employee leave, overtime, etc., and help your staff balance the demands between work and life outside of work
      • Hold monthly meetings with budget holders to discuss budget variance analysis reports and to ensure that they are kept up to date and are included in decisions that affect them.

    6. General

    • Attend staff meetings, staff retreats, staff training, unit meetings and international meetings as required.
      • Contract with consultants to assist with the strengthening of the unit as required
      • Serve as a member of Sonke’s full management teams.
      • Maintain relationships with the bank, auditors and donors.

    Experience and educational qualifications 

    • Commerce degree in Accounting or Finance from a recognised academic institution or equivalent experience
    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in a senior management post within the development sector.
    • Evidence of progressive growth with increasing responsibility in prior employment.
    • Proven initiative and ability to take on and complete projects.
    • Proven experience overseeing a financial system and supporting policies and procedures.
    • Supervisory experience
    • Proven ability to develop an organisation-wide budget based on collective programme strategies and actively manage reporting and expenditure

    About this position

    The Research, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (RMEL) Unit Manager has direct responsibility for leading on Sonke’s overall research, monitoring, evaluation and learning strategy, developing innovative approaches for monitoring, evaluation and learning systems and standards to improve on the quality of  programme and advocacy work within the organisation.

    In addition, the RMEL Unit Manager plays a key role in guiding Sonke’s participation in the broader field of related research, including academic research collaboration and the publication of research results. 

    Key duties and responsibilities

    1.     RMEL portfolio management and administration

    • Supervise and provide oversight for the RMEL Unit;
    • Assist in the strategic development and growth of Sonke’s RMEL work nationally, regionally and internationally, in collaboration with colleagues working on relevant projects in other units;
    • Support budget management of RMEL projects in collaboration with relevant project managers, and work closely with Sonke’s finance team to track budgets, in comparison to programme targets;
    • Support relevant internal audit processes;
    • Manage the development of RM&E tools and processes;  
    • Develop the template for Sonke operational plan that is linked to Sonke’s overall strategic plan;  
    • Budget and monitor expenditure that is linked to the unit’s work;
    • Serve as a member of Sonke’s Full Management Team (FMT) and participate in scheduled management meetings;
    • Responsible for RMEL  risk management & mitigation.

    2.     Work planning and staff management

    • Monitor and support the implementation of RMEL activities and projects, ensuring appropriate interconnections between activities and internal organisational collaboration;
    • Convene RMEL team meetings, project planning and review meetings;
    • Actively manage the performance and development of staff members, manage HR issues and assist staff with work-life balance;  
    • Facilitate team building, team identity and strengthen working relations between individuals;

    3.     Monitoring and Evaluation

    • Monitor the effectiveness in reaching programmatic goals and suggest corrective action when needed;
    • Ensure that M&E activities are an effective tool to demonstrate impact to communities, partner organisations & donors;   
    • Ensure all relevant parties and key collaborating partners are aware of donor M&E requirements and meet the requirements timeously;
    • Assist projects/units in setting measurable and  achievable targets within appropriate  timeframes whilst developing relevant  metrics to assess progress;

    • Ensure timely dissemination of M&E findings within the organisation, partners and donors;
    • Assist with the development and evaluation of plans for all projects;
    • Ensure there is alignment of all M&E project plans and results-based framework plans to Sonke’s strategic framework, goals and targets;
    • Develop sound quality assurance systems and manage the organisational accreditation process in relation to training materials, staff training and Sonke’s accreditation as a training institution.

    4.     Research Management

    • Contribute substantively to global scholarships and debates on issues of gender, violence, health and justice, including research to explore and understand effective strategies for achieving gender equality and social justice;
    • Conduct and support formative research to inform programme development as well as intervention and advocacy work; 
    • Define leading long-term research questions for the organisation;
    • Provide scientific and management oversight for Sonke’s collaborative research work; 
    • Pursue strategic opportunities to collaborate with universities, research institutes and other partners on research that aligns with Sonke’s goals and priorities; 
    • Conduct research on Sonke’s work with the highest standard of scientific integrity and professionalism to build and maintain a reputation for research excellence;
    • Ensure Sonke acts as full partner in the analysis, interpretation, and propagation of research findings from research projects on which Sonke collaborates;  
    • Ensure Sonke’s research output is published in high-quality peer-review academic journals.  
    • Develop an online presence for Sonke as thought leaders in evidence on gender justice and human rights.

    5.     Research training and capacity strengthening

    • Develop appropriate educational and skills-building opportunities, offering training in research methods, and/or structured mentorship and coaching of staff who are interested in research or writing of academic publications;
    • Advise on selection of potential research projects for thesis and dissertation writing and help facilitate incorporation of advanced degree projects;
    • Support and mentor Sonke staff with demonstrated potential who wish to pursue publication of peer-review research articles;
    • Structure and oversee Sonke’s program for interns including designating projects appropriate for interns and select students to match;
    • Pair interns with Sonke staff members and facilitate exchange of skills and knowledge between them;
    • Help Sonke staff prepare and submit abstracts participation in key research meetings, international conferences as well as presentations for meetings through mentorship and coaching.

    6.     Knowledge Management and Strategic Networking

    • Cultivate a culture of evidence based critical thinking in Sonke & incorporate lessons learnt from research into implementation;
    • Provide quality assurance (validation) of materials;
    • Develop and maintain a management system for all materials;
    • Support and facilitate relevant knowledge sharing through appropriate knowledge networks;
    • Attend key research meetings and international conferences to represent Sonke’s research portfolio;
    • Serve as a peer reviewer for journals and research funders and engage in other academic activities to maintain visibility as a senior scholar; 
    • Establish project-based research partnerships;
    • Developing a community of academic advisors for Sonke;
    • Facilitating inter-country knowledge exchange and
    • Facilitate community-driven participatory research practices, embedded in projects.

    7.     Resource mobilisation

    • Actively contribute to efforts to secure ongoing funding for the RMEL unit and participate actively in efforts to mobilise resources by reviewing relevant proposals and donor reports; 
    • Mobilise resources for research projects.

    Educational requirements:

    • Minimum of Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Science or equivalent.  
    • In addition to the Master’s Degree, a post-graduate diploma in M&E will be advantageous.

    Experience required:

    • Minimum of five to eight years post-Master’s experience;
    • Experience in developing results-based frameworks and developing theories of change for large-scale projects;
    • Experience working as a partner in collaborative and team research projects on gender-based violence and HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa, preferably including work with men;
    • Understanding of designing and implementing monitoring and evaluation tools and frameworks for projects related to the topics above; 
    • Track record of peer-reviewed academic publications and/or other scholarly output relating to gender equality, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and HIV/AIDS – preferably including work with men – in Southern Africa desirable;
    • Experience in teaching basic research methods in public health and/or social sciences desirable;
    • Knowledge in conducting qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis;
