    Sonke is looking to appoint a Junior Accountant in its Cape Town office. The Junior Accountant will be responsible for preparing accounting records and financial reporting. This position has the following primary responsibilities:

    Key duties and responsibilities

    1. Compliance:

    • Ensure compliance with Sonke’s financial policies, procedures and donor requirements.

    2. Debtors

    • Draft invoices and follow up on outstanding payments.
    • Reconciliation of debtor accounts.
    • Manage and reconcile staff advances.
    • Check, reconcile and follow up on outstanding queries.
    • Process staff advance reconciliations on Pastel.

    3. Transaction processing

    • Capture transactions on Pastel Evolution.
    • Manage and reconcile bank accounts, credit cards and petty cash.
    • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
    • Process accruals and pre-paid transactions.
    • Process journals.
    • Import salaries onto Nedbank from the internal payroll system on a monthly basis.
    • Capture budgets to Pastel Evolution.
    • Create Pastel accounts.

    4. Financial reporting

    • Prepare internal and external financial reports.
    • Prepare full analysis of all balance sheet accounts monthly.
    • Allocate shared project costs such as debit orders to relevant projects.
    • Provide support to programme staff regarding project budgets and financial reporting.

    5. Audits

    • Assist in the preparation for the annual audit and additional donor specific audits.
    • Collation of relevant documents.
    • Prepare year end schedules and compile of other documentation required by the auditors.
    • Preparation for annual audit.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Degree or Diploma in Accounting or financial management or extensive experience.
    • At least 5-6 years experience in accounting.
    • Minimum of 5 years experience in working in the finance unit in a similar position of a medium-sized South African NGO.

  • Finance Unit Manager

    About the Position

    Sonke is looking for a committed, suitably qualified and experienced individual to fill the position of Finance Unit Manager.

    Key duties and responsibilities

    The Finance Unit Manager will be responsible for:

    • Providing strategic financial management
    • Co-ordinating internal and external audits (organisational and funder-specific)
    • Budgeting, forecasting, as well as financial monitoring and reporting
    • Managing procurement processes within the organisation
    • Provide oversight and management of financial policies, operating procedures & systems
    • Risk management
    • Provide reports and make presentations on all financial matters to management & board meetings
    • develop short, medium, and long-term financial plans and projections
    • Supervision of the finance team

    Strategic financial management

    • Work with Sonke’s Co-Executive Director to develop, refine and guide Sonke’s strategic vision through managing internal and external processes; and providing costing for operational/project activities
    • Co-ordinate and develop budgets based on the organisations strategic plan
    • Monitor the implementation of the strategic financial objectives of the organisation and recommend appropriate investment opportunities to strengthen the organisation’s reserves to provide financial sustainability
    • Take responsibility for strategic financial management and financial analysis in the organisation, to ensure quality, cost effectiveness and accuracy of financial reporting
    • Revise, amend & implement Sonke’s financial systems to ensure proper and transparent financial management in line with International Financial Reporting Standards
    • Work with the Co-Executive Director to ensure that all funding contracts are rigorously managed to avoid organisational risk
    • Develop and improve internal reporting processes & support programme staff in budget development
    • Ensure financial policies and procedures are reviewed and updated annually, ensuring the organisation has mechanisms for the monitoring of internal controls and compliance
    • Manage the cash flow of the organisation, together with all bank accounts, petty cash floats and organisational credit/debit cards, prepare/review cash flow projections on an ongoing basis and advise the Co-Executive Director & Senior Management Team on cost saving measures across the organisation

    Management of Audits

    • Co-ordinate the external annual audit, donor specific audits, and oversee internal audits
    • Co-ordinate pre-audit meetings to establish expectations and requirements prior to the audit, make recommendations on findings & ensure prompt corrective action is implemented where appropriate

    Management of Finance Team

    • Convene weekly team meetings and monitor implementation of the unit’s work plan
    • Conduct monthly documented supervision meetings and performance appraisals with staff members
    • Manage staff development plans and other human resource matters for the Finance Unit and play a key role in building the financial management skills of the team
    • Facilitate team building, team identity and strengthen working relations between staff members

    Payroll Management & adherence to statutory requirements:

    • Manage the efficient administration of payroll and oversee timely processing of payments
    • Ensure that Sonke is compliant with all statutory requirements and payments

    Management of Assets

    • Provide oversight and management of the organisation’s property & equipment including the Asset Register

    Donor Reporting

    • Ensure that donor reporting takes account of the provisions of all relevant funding contracts
    • Ensure that monthly Income and Expenditure reports, year-to-dates, showing expenses incurred, funds available and funds needed for the remainder of the project are prepared as per the various deadlines

    Experience and educational qualifications

    • A Bachelor of Commerce Degree (B.Com Honours advantageous)
    • Exceptional knowledge of IFRS

  • Operations Intern

    General roles and responsibilities of the position

    Working closely with the Co-Executive Director, the Operations intern will get exposure to daily operations of the organisation. In addition to working with the Co-Executive Director, they will be exposed to other functions of the Operations unit such as Finance, Sub-Awards and Human Resources Unit.

    The duration of the Internship is 6 months.

    Key performance areas

    1. Provide administrative support to the Co-Executive Director

    • Minute taking for the Board, SMT, FMT, PUM and other meetings and follow up on action items status
    • Ensure that all meeting minutes is placed in the minute book and signed
    • Maintain a filing system of board correspondence and all key board documents
    • Provide all administrative support for board meetings
    • Providing logistical support to the Co-Executive Director including booking of board room, arranging catering, printing of documents and compiling of meeting packs for the following meetings:
      • Senior and Full Management Team meetings
      • Board Meetings

    About the position

    The Executive Assistant will work closely with the Co-Executive Directors in ensuring that the organisation is compliant both with its own reporting requirements as well as its external compliance requirements, will maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work of the organisation and will provide secretariat functions to the Board and Co-Executive Directors of Sonke. The Executive Assistant will be responsible for taking and drafting the minutes of the board and management team meetings and other ad hoc meetings and will assist with all logistics relating to the Board, Senior Management Team and Full Management Team meetings and assist with the compilation of the operational plan and will execute tasks at a high level which includes:

    1. Coordination of management meetings;
    2. Management of diaries of the Co-Executive Directors;
    3. Provision of high level administrative planning, coordination, operational and logistical support to the Board, Senior Management Team and Full Management Teams;
    4. Assist ing the Co-Executive Directors with the compilation of the operational plan; and
    5. Ensuring compliance internally and externally in adherence to statutory requirements.

    Qualification and experience

    • College diploma or secretarial school qualification required. A degree would be an advantage.

  • National Prisons Specialist

This position is a member of Sonke’s Policy Development & Advocacy (PDA) unit but working closely with all of Sonke’s other units and work areas.

    About the position

    The Policy Development and Advocacy National Prisons Specialist (‘National Prisons Specialist’) coordinates and oversees all aspects of organisation’s national prisons policy advocacy work. The National Specialist will be responsible for policy research and analysis, and the implem entation of various advocacy campaigns within the Policy Development and Advocacy (PDA) Unit. This includes coordinating and developing the One Judge One Jail Campaign, litigation, research, lobbying, media advocacy, development of partnerships, and budget management and reporting. The National Specialist will also engage actively in professional learning and development, and will represent Sonke at various fora and conferences.

    Key duties and responsibilities for this position are as follows:

    1. National Prisons Law and Policy Work

    a. Lead National Prisons Law and Policy work

    • Serve as the lead for the organisation’s policy interventions in prisons and places of detention in South Africa and regionally.
    • Develop and maintain key partnerships with external organisations working on health, rights, sexual abuse, and oversight in prisons.
    • Engage with National and Provincial Departments of Government, including oversight bodies, to propose new policy initiatives and monitor the fulfilment of their duties and implementation of relevant laws and policies, focusing especially on the prisons project advocacy priorities pertaining to sexual violence, HIV and AIDS, TB, human rights and gender.
    • Work closely with the peer educators to provide training to inmates, detainees correctional staff and members of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS).

    b. Strengthening the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services

    • Conduct research to inform draft legislation to strengthen JICS’ independence and mandate, this includes comparative analysis of best practice across a number of foreign jurisdictions.
    • Work with the Detention Justice Forum to draft new legislation.
    • Advocacy and media content developed.

    c. Strategic Litigation

    • Support strategic litigation to promote prisons reform. This includes the litigation to address overcrowding, bail conditions, minimum sentencing, and to prompt legislative reform for JICS.
    • Support will include working with the Community Education and Mobilisation Unit’s prison team to train ex-inmate activists on the cases and support media on the cases, drafting press releases, media pieces, acting as the spokesperson for the cases, liaising with journalists, producing case studies and short pieces on the cases, presenting at conferences, and conducting internal training for Sonke staff.

    d. Parliamentary advocacy

    • Track Portfolio Committee on Justice & Correctional Services meetings and submission dates. Relay important dates and circulate relevant reports and PMG minutes to PDA unit.
    • Analyse MPs sitting on the Committee and identify individuals for further engagement.
    • Attend relevant strategic meetings to engage formally and informally with MPs to advance advocacy priorities.
    • Draft submissions to the Portfolio Committee on the Annual Reports of JICS, DCS, and NPA, and make oral submissions as required.
    • Participate in the National Task Team for TB and HIV in Prisons (NTT), the Detention Justice Forum and the South African National AIDS Council.

    2. Other Key Programmatic Areas

    • Support other PDA projects and cross-unit collaboration as requested.
    • Project and Grants management and reporting.
    • Support the unit’s resource mobilisation by identifying funding opportunities, developing proposals and budgets, and participating in negotiating agreements with funders, and ensure that grant agreements are implemented.
    • Work with Research and Monitoring and Evaluation Unit and other relevant staff to ensure external evaluations of grants, as well as ongoing M&E is successfully completed.

    Qualifications and experience

    • A masters degree in gender, human rights law and or public interest law, or related field
    • 3-5 years of legal and policy work in human rights, with a focus on incarceration and detention
    • Public impact litigation experience is highly recommended
    • Programme development, management and training
    • Legal advocacy experience and the running of independent campaigns in the human rights sector
    • Participation in, or membership of, governmental or semi-governmental bodies on correctional services
    • Legal research and the drafting of memoranda
    • Familiarity with existing South African laws and policies related to gender based violence, prisons, and HIV/AIDS
    • In-depth knowledge of civil society work on prisons in South Africa (regional experience is an advantage)
    • Media engagement and drafting of strategic press releases and popular advocacy pieces
    • Proficiency in at least one indigenous South African language

    About the position

    The Compliance and Governance Coordinator will work closely with the Co-Executive Director responsible for operations to ensure that the organisation is compliant with its own reporting and external compliance requirements.

    The Compliance and Governance Co-ordinator has the following primary responsibilities:

  • Legal Advocacy and Litigation Manager

This position is a member of Sonke’s Policy Development & Advocacy (PDA) unit but working closely with all of Sonke’s other units and work areas.

    About the position

    The Legal Advocacy and Litigation Manager is a new position which will support Sonke’s efforts to hold national and local government accountable for their commitments to advance gender equality, address HIV and AIDS, and ensure the right to health. It will do this by supporting community level activism while also providing legal advice and input on national campaigns, including through media advocacy. This position will report to the Unit Head of Policy Development & Advocacy and work directly with the Community Education and Mobilisation unit (CEM).

    This position is funded as part of a multi-year project aimed at supporting Sonke to consolidate and build on its innovative community mobilisation model to amplify the call for gender justice and accelerated action towards the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. By increasing the linkages between community education and activism, rights literacy, media advocacy and the use of the law to advance gender equality in Africa, it is expected that the following key outcomes will be achieved: 1) Men and women, Community Action Teams, CBOs and Sonke’s partners have the capacity, commitment and skills to mobilise around, prevent and respond to gender-based violence in project countries; 2) Increased accountability and action from local level duty bearers in project countries to respond to gender-based violence; 3) National governments in project countries are held accountable to develop, review and implement evidence-based strategies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence, including engaging men and boys for gender equality and an end to GBV; 4) Regional and global gender-based violence policies, policy processes and frameworks are more responsive to civil society advocacy, and advance the SDGs, including through engaging men and boys for gender justice; 5) Religious and traditional leaders increasingly take action to advance gender equality and address gender-based violence; 6) Sonke and partners are strengthened and can catalyse change for gender equality nationally, regionally and globally.

    Key duties and responsibilities for this position are as follows:

    1. Strengthen Sonke’s ability to engage in community level legal advocacy for access to justice: Provide regular training to Sonke staff, including especially community mobilisers and trainers within the CEM team, on existing GBV laws and local accountability processes so that CEM team members are themselves then able to provide rights literacy trainings to CAT members in communities across the country.
    2. Support Community Action Team activism: Provide legal research, support and advice to CAT members and Sonke trainers in the monitoring of GBV cases, identifying gaps in case information that might lead to delays in legal proceedings and court cases.
    3. Support local government action on GBV, health and human rights: Work with CEM staff and CAT members to engage local government officials and together with them, develop and monitor local action plans to address GBV.
    4. Support national legal and policy advocacy : Provide legal input on Sonke’s policy reform efforts in various campaigns, including South Africa’s National Strategic Plan (NSP) for GBV, prison reform, abolition of corporal punishment and enforcement of existing bans within schools, expanded parental le ave, access to psycho-social support, decriminalisation of sex work, and the gendered dimensions of silicosis and occupational disability.
    5. Support and conceptualise strategic litigation and other legal interventions: support existing impact litigation already happening at Sonke, and provide advice on potential strategic litigation, including in partnership with key allies in the health and human rights sector. Use existing research and data from community based program mes to conceptualise other non-litigation interventions to support Sonke’s key campaigns. Working with the CSI unit to ensure that all legal interventions where appropriate are combined with a community education and sensitisation of legal methods used as part of advancing engaging active citizenry and rights education.
    6. Provide support and mentorship to the Sonke – UCLA Health and Human Rights Fellowship programme, including through mentorship to the Fellow(s) upon their return to Sonke. Assist PDA unit with advertising and marketing the Fellowship, involvement in recruitment and appointment of fellows and assisting with integration and support of fellows during their stay in at UCLA and upon their return.

This CM model will include the following components: 1) Community education and rights literacy on GBV, HIV and AIDS, citizen activism and human rights, 2) establishing, supporting and sustaining community action teams, 3) engaging representatives of local and provincial government to develop joint local GBV and HIV prevention strategies and plans, including working on IDP processes, 4) holding local government, and especially the health and criminal justice systems accountable, particularly in cases of domestic and sexual violence, 5) documenting and sharing community experiences generating lessons from experiences in local communities to inform Sonke’s provincial and national level advocacy for a GBV NSP. This will include:
      1. Working with all unit managers, oversee the finalisation of Sonke materials, manuals and tools for CM;
      2. Train Sonke staff on the CM model and ensure all staff understand and can support its implementation;
      3. Work with PDA to develop a Legal Advocacy and Litigation Unit (LALU) which will support Sonke’s CM through the provision of legal advocacy and support to CM teams working at the local level and generate potential cases for strategic litigation; and
      4. Work with the CSI unit to document and share Sonke’s CM model, especially at the local level.
    • Provide support to Sonke’s existing community mobilisation work especially on integrating a focus on accountability in various impact evaluations: CHARISMA in Hillbrow focused on the roll-out of microbicides, Tsima Treatment as Prevention RCT in BBR, iAlarm on community mobilisation to increase men’s use of HIV services in Gugulethu, the GAP Year project focused on GBV and HIV prevention with adolescents in CPT and JHB, and Sonke CHANGE in Diepsloot to prevent GBV at the community level.

    3. Resource Mobilisation

    • Work with the Resource Mobilisation manager and others to ensure continued funding for Sonke’s programmatic work, including sustaining ongoing relations with key donors.

    4. Staff management

    • Provide guidance, support and mentorship to senior direct reports and staff; and

    Qualifications and Experience:

    The Registered Nurse will run wellness programmes at the Wellness Centre and in the City Metro’s Key Populations intervention centres, in coordination with three Senior Trainers from Sonke’s Cape Town offices.

    The work at the Wellness Centre aim to increase uptake of medical health services such as screening for High Blood Pressure, diabetes, HIV testing, including Medical Male Circumcision. The incumbent will be expected to take the same services to the Key Populations (such as refugees and migrants) in various areas at the City of Cape Town. The second aim is to mobilise communities to challenge Gender Based Violence through the promotion of gender equality strategies so as to reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS exacerbated by gender inequalities.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Screens and enrols clients according to specific protocol requirements.
    • Responsible for the Informed Consent Process per the SOPs.

    About this position

    The purpose of the position of Senior Trainer is to reduce sexual gender-based violence, particularly, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) in the community through trainings, IEC talks, community dialogues and other community-based interventions. The Senior Trainer will mentor mobilisers to engage the community on topics of human rights and the reduction of sexual gender-based violence (SGBV) by challenging the gender inequalities exacerbating the spread and impact of sexual harassment and the improvement of services.

    About the position

    The Compliance and Governance Coordinator will work closely with the Operations Director to ensure that the organisation is compliant with its own reporting and external compliance requirements.

    The Compliance and Governance Co-ordinator has the following primary responsibilities:

    • Provide secretariat function to the Board

    About this position

    Sonke has well established prisons work in South Africa which contributed to the adoption in 2013 of a Policy Framework to Address Sexual Abuse of Inmates in Department of Correctional Services Facilities. Building upon this, the Regional Prisons Advocacy Project Manager is responsible for strategic leadership, coordination and implementation of Sonke’s regional prisons project. Funded by the UKaid Evidence for HIV Prevention in Southern Africa (EHPSA) programme, this project will contribute to bringing about prison reform, and so reduce sexual violence in prisons (SViP), in South Africa, Malawi and Zambia, whilst establishing and sharing learning on effective influencing across the region. Based in Cape Town, the Project Manager will work closely with the Sonke prisons team and partners in the three countries to develop and coordinate strategic influencing interventions whilst ensuring effective tracking across the project so that interventions may be adapted and critical learning established and shared. Working out of the Policy Development and Advocacy Unit, the Project Manager will be responsible for managing the Sonke prisons team, consultants and relationships with implementing partners, and the budget for the project. They will lead on key external relationships, including with EHPSA and other funders, and particularly to ensure sharing and take-up of learning across the region and beyond.

    Key Functions:

    Manage Sonke’s regional work to bring about prison reform, and so reduce sexual violence in prisons.

    1. Strategic leadership of Sonke’s advocacy work on prisons

    • Ensure the development of influencing strategies for work relating to South Africa, Malawi and Zambia that reflect most effective responses to opportunities to influence key stakeholders given time and resources available.
    • Ensure the development of work-plans to effect the influencing strategies within appropriate time-frames.
    • Lead on the development of a culture of analysis and learning across the project to inform decision-making.

    The Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Unit Manager has direct responsibility for leading Sonke’s overall research, monitoring, evaluation and learning strategy, managing the unit’s MEL strategic guidance and capacity building across the organisation, and developing innovative approaches to institutionalising MEL systems and standards to improve programme and advocacy quality, implementation, and sustainability. In addition, the RME Unit Manager plays a key role in guiding Sonke’s academic research collaborations.

    1. RME unit management and administration

    • Support the strategic development and growth of Sonke’s RME work nationally, regionally and internationally, in collaboration with colleagues working on relevant projects in other units.
    • Support budget management of RME projects in collaboration with relevant project managers, and work closely with Sonke’s finance team to track budgets;
    • Support relevant internal audit processes, in conjunction with existing staff and the Programmes Director;
    • Manage the development of M&E tools and processes, theories of change, operational plan, linkages to Sonke’s overall strategic plan, and work closely with the organisation’s M&E staff;
    • Serve as a member of Sonke’s Full Management Team and participate in scheduled management meetings;
    • Supervise and provide oversight for the Research, Monitoring & Evaluation Unit;
    • Budget and monitor expenditure; and
    • Risk management & mitigation.

     2. Work planning and staff management

    • Monitor and support implementation of RME activities and projects, ensuring appropriate interconnections between activities and internal organisational collaboration;
    • Conduct monthly documented supervision, and periodic appraisals, with RME staff members in collaboration with the Programmes Director to facilitate work planning and follow up;
    • Convene RME team meetings, project planning and review meetings;
    • Manage staff development plans and other human resource matters for the RME unit and play a key role in building the financial and budget management skills of the team;
    • Actively manage the performance and development of staff members through regular one on one meetings; and
    • Provide guidance to staff through positive leadership and manage day to day HR issues.

    3. Research

    • Develop a sustainable in-house program me of research that will complement and inform Sonke’s programmatic and policy activities;
    • Contribute substantively to global scholarships and debates on issues of gender, violence, health and justice, including research to explore and understand effective strategies for achieving gender equality and social justice;
    • Ensure Sonke’s research output is disseminated in peer-review academic journals. This will include serving both as lead author on publications, co-authoring publications with senior collaborators at other organisations, and supporting and mentoring junior staff with potential for successful academic writing and/or are pursuing advanced degrees;
    • Targets for other articles determined annually based on status of projects in the field and the numb er of staff pursuing academic writing projects;
    • Ensure that Sonke’s research output is also disseminated in formats accessible to a wide variety of community stakeholders;
    • Conduct and support formative research to inform program development;
    • Gather evidence to inform intervention and advocacy work;
    • Pursue impact evaluations and disseminating of the findings;
    • Provide scientific and management oversight for Sonke’s collaborative research work;
    • Pursue strategic opportunities to collaborate with universities, research institutes, and other partners on research that aligns with Sonke’s goals and priorities;
    • Ensure Sonke’s work on research collaborations is conducted with the highest standard of scientific integrity and professionalism to build and ma intain a reputation for research excellence; and
    • Ensure Sonke acts as full partner in the analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of research findings from
      newly agreed to research projects on which Sonke collaborates. This will include ensuring that research contracts incorporate appropriate data access and use agreements, appropriate authorship agreements for eventual outputs, and appropriate opportunities for skills building and professional development of Sonke staff.

    4. Monitoring and Evaluation

    • Ensure Sonke monitors effectiveness in meeting programmatic goals and motivate for course-correcting action as needed;
    • Ensure that M&E activities are an effective tool to demonstrate impact to communities, partner organisations, donors, and to the public;
    • Provide ongoing support and supervision to the RM&E Unit;
    • Ensure all relevant parties – including Sonke staff, and key collaborating partners – are aware of donor M&E requirements and prepared to meet those requirements;
    • Assist projects/units in setting measurable, meaningful, and achievable targets and timeframes and developing appropriate metrics to assess progress;
    • Ensure appropriate data management systems are in place to collect and collate accurate and reliable M&E data;
    • Ensure that M&E findings are disseminated within the organisation, to partners, and to donors in a timely and appropriate manner;
    • As necessary and appropriate, mobilise resources to support these M&E activities;
    • Develop and implement evaluation plans for all projects;
    • Manage evaluation processes, including liaising with external stakeholders and service providers, creating terms of reference and evaluation guidelines, and ensure that baseline studies are conducted for all projects and that information is stored for future use;
    • Ensure that all project M&E plans and results based frameworks align with the organisation’s strategic framework, Theory of Change, goals and targets; and
    • Develop strong quality assurance systems.

    5. Training and capacity development

    • Develop appropriate educational and skills-building opportunities, including topic-specific knowledge sharing, offering training in research methods, and/or structured mentorship and coaching of staff and partners who are pursuing pilot projects, preliminary research, or writing of academic publications;
    • Support Sonke staff who wish to pursue advanced training in relevant disciplines;
    • Advise on selection of training programs and seeking funds for bursaries;
    • Advise on selection of potential research projects for thesis and dissertation writing, and help facilitate incorporation of advanced degree projects with Sonke duties;
    • Serve as an academic supervisor or co-supervisor for Sonke staff where appropriate;
    • Support and mentor Sonke staff who wish to pursue publication of peer-review research articles;
    • Structure and oversee Sonke’s program for interns in collaboration with other Unit Managers and the HR Unit Manager; and
    • Help Sonke staff prepare and submit abstracts for participation in key research meetings and international conferences and to prepare presentations for meetings through mentorship and coaching.

    6. Strategic networking

    • Support and facilitate relevant knowledge sharing through appropriate knowledge networks;
    • Attend key research meetings and international conferences to represent Sonke’s research portfolio, network, and seek additional funding;
    • As requested and deemed strategically advisable, serve as a consultant or advisor to international agencies, policy makers, advisory groups, or other organisations;
    • Maintain membership in relevant professional organisations, and take on leadership roles as appropriate and strategically advisable; and
    • Serve as a peer reviewer for journals and research funders (when requested) and engage in other academic
      service activities as appropriate to maintain Unit Manager’s profile and visibility as a senior scholar.

    7. Resource mobilisation

    • Actively contribute to efforts to secure ongoing funding for Sonke’s Research and M&E unit and participate actively in Sonke’s efforts to mobilise resources by reviewing relevant proposals and donor reports.

    Qualifications

    A minimum of a Master’s degree in public health, social science or similar field.

    Experience Required:

    • Minimum of five to eight years post-Masters experience;
    • Experience developing results based frameworks and developing theories of change for large scale projects;
    • Experience working as a partner in collaborative and team research projects on gender-based violence and HIV and AIDS in Southern Africa, preferably including work with men;
    • Experience designing and implementing monitoring and evaluation tools and frameworks for projects;
    • Track record of peer-reviewed academic publications and/or other scholarly output relating to gender equality, intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and HIV/AIDS – preferably including work with men – in Southern Africa desirable;
    • Experience teaching basic research methods in public health and/or social sciences desirable;
    • Experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis;

    About the position

    Sonke provides sub-awards to external organizations as part of its project implementation activities and provides funding to these organizations for project activities. The Sub-Awards Specialist will be responsible for managing the sub-award process with a focus on reducing risks to Sonke by assessing the partners’ ability to implement the project, manage funding and to work with project managers to monitor sub-recipients and assist with capacity building.

    Specific responsibilities:

    1. Sub-award review

    • Review donor requirements for sub-award management and develop a plan to ensure compliance with donor requirements;
    • Review proposed sub-award budgets and programme activities to determine if budgeted amounts and timelines are appropriate.

    2. Sub-award assessments

    • Review and update sub-recipient pre-award assessment tools and operating procedures to ensure tools are appropriate;
    • Determine the most appropriate and cost-effective method of conducting the pre-award assessment;
    • Conduct pre-award assessments for each sub-award and determine risk rating for each subaward;
    • Establish monitoring and follow-up requirements based on the results of the pre-award;
    • Conduct pre-award assessments based on donor and Sonke’s operating procedures;
    • Determine appropriate sub-award mechanisms for contractual agreements with partners;
    • Work with the project manager to identify where capacity building or technical assistance is required;
    • Work with sub-recipients to address high-risk issues from the pre-award assessment;
    • Monitor, develop and implement corrective action plans for sub-recipients; and
    • Conduct follow-up post-award assessments to keep assessment ratings current.

    3. Training and capacity building

    • Provide orientation to sub-recipients on management of funds, processing of documentation and reporting, as well as preparations for audits;
    • Provide technical assistance and capacity building to address risk in relation to pre-award assessments and project deliverables; and
    • Provide training to Sonke staff on sub-award management procedures.

    4. Sub-award implementation and monitoring

    • Review financial reports from sub-recipients, ensuring accuracy and supporting documents are provided;
    • Monitor sub-award spending against budget to ensure sub-awards are not overspent and variances in spending are not excessive. Ensure variances are explained and documented;
    • Monitor sub-recipients’ compliance with terms and conditions of sub-awards;
    • Make recommendations and take action in instances of non-compliance to reduce risks to Sonke; and
    • Obtain donor authorizations for specific project issues such as procurement of equipment and travel.

    5. Sub-award close out

    • Manage close-out process of sub-awards including timely submission of final reports by subrecipients;
    • Review final reports and ensure timely submission of final donor reports;
    • Obtain donor authorization for disposition of equipment and ensure documentation is obtained for transfer of equipment; and
    • Arrange for safe-guarding or transfer of files in possession of sub-recipients related to the subaward.

    6. Filing, reporting and compliance

    • Ensure sub-award files are complete and accurate, including documents on pre- and post-award assessments, signed sub-award agreements, budgets, narrative and financial reports & audit reports;
    • Provide timely and accurate donor reports to appropriate staff and to donors;
    • Ensure procedures are in place to comply with donor and Sonke compliance requirements;
    • Participate in regular sub-award meetings; and
    • Maintain a sub-award schedule detailing all compliance issues.

    Qualifications and experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in related discipline. Advanced degree would be advantageous.
    • Minimum 5 years equivalent experience in a similar capacity in grant management or sub-award management;

    About the position

    The Wellness Centre Co-ordinator will have direct responsibility for managing the activities and work of the trainers working from the Wellness Centre.

    The purpose of the Wellness Centre Co-ordinator position is to provide direction, co-ordination, implementation and completion of specific projects ensuring consistency with organisational strategy, commitments and goals. In addition to ensuring the effective functioning of the wellness centre, the co-ordinator will also manage the trainers and ensure that project implementation is completed in a timely manner. Furthermore, through the work at the Wellness Centre aim to prevent new HIV infections and end Gender Based Violence through training and mentoring community action team members to support men in the target areas to reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS by reducing their HIV risk, increasing their use of HIV services and by challenging the gender inequalities exacerbating the spread and impact of HIV and AIDs.

    Key responsibilities:

    1. Planning, implementation and reporting of the work
      • Lead the planning and implementation of projects at the Wellness Centre;
      • Conduct formative research when required to;
      • Plan and schedule timelines for activities at the Wellness Centre;
      • Execute the implementation plan;
      • Report on monthly ongoing project progress;
      • Present reports defining project progress, identifying problems and provide solutions.
    2. Development and provision of IEC Materials
      • Work with the WC CEM Manager to develop and provide IEC materials;
      • Ensure that materials are distributed in accordance with the work plan.
      • Ensure that the Wellness Centre and Trainers are provisioned with the required materials and resources to execute their tasks/objectives.
    3. Training and mentoring
      • Provide training and mentoring in the identified areas on the implementation of One Man Can model;
      • Facilitate the definition of project scope, goals and deliverables;
      • Assemble and co-ordinate project staff;
      • Track team deliverable using appropriate tools;
      • Provide direction and support to project teams.
    4. Community Mobilisation and Network building
      • Support the trainers and Community Action Teams on implementing Sonke’s community mobilizing strategies;
      • Strengthen partnerships with key stakeholders (MSATs, health care workers, police, educators/school, faith leaders, local government/ward councillors);
      • Conduct/host quarterly partner meetings at the wellness centre.
    5. Provision and distribution of training materials
      • Provide training materials, condoms, IEC materials and other promotional materials to Community Action Teams and Community Based Organisations;
      • Track the success of the interventions and the distribution of materials undertaken by identifying and providing training and mentoring to Community Action Teams in identified areas on the implementation of the One Man Can type approach. These approaches include mass mobilization, ambush theatre, street soccer, digital storytelling, community radio talk shows and others. Facilitate all bi-monthly Community Action Teams and monthly community activities.
    6. Monitoring and Evaluation
      • Monitor and evaluate project success and compliance with deliverables;
      • Facilitate a smooth exit from the target area at the end of the project period

    Qualifications:

    • Applicants must hold a minimum of a Senior Certificate (Grade 12) qualification.
    • A Degree in the social sciences, with a strong preference for Public Health, or Human Rights degrees is advantageous.
    • A minimum of 5 to 7 years experience in having worked in a complex human rights & public health environment.
    • Extensive knowledge on Sonke’s One Man Can Model and a track record of community mobilisation,
